The Error Detection: Exercises for the Instrumental Conductor texts are designed to improve the critical listening skills of the conducting student... through real music excerpts that contain planted errors in the parts for the conductor to find. Both books contain 54 excerpts from standard band literature from grades 2 to grade 6 so students gain knowledge of real music they can use later, not just non-musical etudes. The teacher's edition contains over 350 pages of materials with analysis sheets and answer keys to help the conducting teacher to easily evaluate the student's progress. The teacher's edition also comes with a CD-ROM containing all of the instrumental parts for all of the musical excerpts as PDF files, so the teacher can just print the amount of parts needed for each example, and the examples are arranged to sound satisfying with as little as five players. The Error Detection program has been tested for over 3 years at major university programs like the University of Minnesota, Illinois State University, and the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati.

“Students must learn mathematics with understanding, actively building new knowledge from experience and prior knowledge.”  From the Principles... for School Mathematics of NCTM standards, copyright NCTM 2000-2004.   Yet sometimes when students are learning mathematics, they learn misconceptions and adopt erroneous procedures despite the best efforts of their teacher.  This book was written to help teachers to detect the systematic errors many students make–whether using paper and pencil, or calculators or computers.  Emphasizing concepts and skills, in accordance with the NCTM standards, this readable and engaging supplementary text will help all teachers of math methods to become more proficient at diagnosing and correcting computational procedures.  Teachers will gain skills by actually looking for error patterns, making decisions, and planning instruction.   The book is organized into two parts with appendices.  The first part is mainly devoted to instructional issues and considers the place of computation in today’s world of technology and then focuses on various aspects of assessment and instruction for both concepts and skills.  Part Two presents sample student papers within topical chapters.  These papers provide opportunities to identify patterns of error and to reflect on the best course of corrective instruction.  Readers can then compare their responses with those of the author.  The appendices provide additional papers for even more practice in identifying error patterns.     New To This Edition: NEW!  Gives greater emphasis on diagnosis as a part of formative assessment. NEW!  Includes more material on understanding the meanings of operations to help teachers and students understand the operations of arithmetic so they will know when to use each operation when solving problems. NEW!  Enables teachers to plan varied instruction that involves connections with other mathematics and varied applications.

Our schools and colleges often make the intellectual life seem more impenetrable, narrowly specialized, and inaccessible than it is or needs to be,... argues this eminent scholar and educator, whose provocative book offers a wealth of practical suggestions for making the culture of ideas and arguments more readily understandable.“Graff is reopening the door on a major debate. In the wake of theory, in the wake of feminism, post-colonial criticism and all the rest, what is a liberal arts education supposed to be about? How should teachers teach? What should students learn? Intelligently, humanely, Gerald Graff is bringing all of these questions back home to the classroom, which, at least for now, seems exactly where they belong.”—Mark Edmundson, Washington Post Book World“['Graff] writes with lucidity and charm. . . . A worthwhile work.”—Steven Lagerfeld, Wall Street Journal“Clueless in Academe is charming. . . . The reader chuckles in recognition over the tales told of scholars and students.”—Terence Kealey, The Times Higher Education Supplement

The study covers the error of failing to bring offenders to justice as well as the errors of imposing costs on innocent people and excessive costs on offenders. This collection of new translations brings together the small proportion of Kafka's works that he thought worthy of publication. It includes... "Metamorphosis", his most famous work, an exploration of horrific transformation and alienation; "Meditation", a collection of his earlier studies; "The Judgement", written in a single night of frenzied creativity; "The Stoker", the first chapter of a novel set in America and a fascinating occasional piece, "The Aeroplanes at Brescia", Kafka's eyewitness account of an air display in 1909. Together, these stories reveal the breadth of Kafka's literary vision and the extraordinary imaginative depth of his thought.

Franz Kafka (3. Juli 1883 in Prag, damals Österreich-Ungarn; 3. Franz Kafka (3 July 1883 – 3 June 1924) was one of the major fiction writers of the 20th century. He was born to a middle-class German-speaking Jewish family in Prague, Austria-Hungary, presently the Czech Republic. His unique body of writing—much of which is incomplete and which was mainly published posthumously—is considered to be among the most influential in Western literature. His stories, such as The Metamorphosis (1915), and novels, including The Trial (1925) and The Castle (1926), concern troubled individuals in a nightmarishly impersonal and bureaucratic world. Biographers have said that it was common for Kafka to read chapters of the books he was working on to his closest friends, and that those readings usually concentrated on the humorous side of his prose. Milan Kundera refers to the essentially surrealist humour of Kafka as a main predecessor of later artists such as Federico Fellini, Gabriel García Márquez, Carlos Fuentes and Salman Rushdie. For García Márquez, it was as he said the reading of Kafka's The Metamorphosis that showed him "that it was possible to write in a different way." - Wikipedia

Jeffrey Kripal here recounts the spectacular history of Esalen, the institute that has long been a world leader in alternative and experiential... education and stands today at the center of the human potential movement. Forged in the literary and mythical leanings of the Beat Generation, inspired in the lecture halls of Stanford by radical scholars of comparative religion, the institute was the remarkable brainchild of Michael Murphy and Richard Price. Set against the heady backdrop of California during the revolutionary 1960s, Esalen recounts in fascinating detail how these two maverick thinkers sought to fuse the spiritual revelations of the East with the scientific revolutions of the West, or to combine the very best elements of Zen Buddhism, Western psychology, and Indian yoga into a decidedly utopian vision that rejected the dogmas of conventional religion. In their religion of no religion, the natural world was just as crucial as the spiritual one, science and faith not only commingled but became staunch allies, and the enlightenment of the body could lead to the full realization of our development as human beings.  “An impressive new book. . . . [Kripal] has written the definitive intellectual history of the ideas behind the institute.”—San Francisco Chronicle “Kripal examines Esalen’s extraordinary history and evocatively describes the breech birth of Murphy and Price’s brainchild. His real achievement, though, is effortlessly synthesizing a dizzying array of dissonant phenomena (Cold War espionage, ecstatic religiosity), incongruous pairings (Darwinism, Tantric sex), and otherwise schizy ephemera (psychedelic drugs, spaceflight) into a cogent, satisfyingly complete narrative.”—Atlantic Monthly “Kripal has produced the first all-encompassing history of Esalen: its intellectual, social, personal, literary and spiritual passages. Kripal brings us up-to-date and takes us deep beneath historical surfaces in this definitive, elegantly written book.”—Playboy
