—The first definitive overview of the Tonalist movement-the crucial but long-misunderstood missing link in the evolution of American art —An... indispensable reference for museums, artists, and academics, covering some 50 artists, with many never-before-published works This groundbreaking book details the development and importance of Tonalism, starting with La Farge, Whistler, and Inness in the late 1800s, through its influence on the development of modernism in the Stieglitz Circle, on to Milton Avery, the Abstract Expressionism of Rothko, Gottlieb and Newman, and finally, postmodern Tonalists like Wolf Kahn. Challenging standard notions of American art history, and tracing the origins of modernism in America back to the late 1870s, this tome argues Tonalism is the driving force in the development of a distinctly American vision, reflecting abstract and spiritual impulses that remain a force in American art today. Through its imagery, scholarship, and a narrative that incorporates the voices of long-overlooked artists, critics, and writers, this volume will serve as an indispensable guide to the cultural history of turn-of-the-century America.

This exciting new edition of A History of Ancient Greece in its Mediterranean Context has been thoroughly revised and expanded to cover the development... of Greece from the Neolithic through the Hellenistic periods from the point of view of its wider Mediterranean context. This approach is growing in popularity with Greek historians as archaeological evidence increasingly demonstrates that the culture and political life of Greece were not isolated developments, but rather formed an integral part of the wider Mediterranean world, shaped by seaborne interactions with other Mediterranean peoples, from the Levant to Italy, Sicily and Sardinia. The text retains its strong emphasis on the interpretation of archaeological evidence, original source material, and the introduction of the student to discussions of historical questions by noted scholars, as is demonstrated in a number of features that provide useful teaching aids: * Source Analyses * Websites * Extensive Footnotes * Map Exercises

This classic textbook, widely used for over two decades, constructs a history of ancient Israel and Judah through a thorough investigation of... epigraphical, archaeological, and biblical sources. Approaching biblical history as history, Miller and Hayes examine the political and economic factors that give context to the Israelite monarchy's actions and the biblical writers' accounts. Now updated with the latest research and critical discoveries, including the Tel Dan Inscription, and considering the lively debate surrounding the reliability of biblical accounts, Miller and Hayes's judicious and even-handed portrayal gives detailed attention to the nature, strengths, and limitations of various forms of evidence for understanding Israel's origins and early history. The new edition also includes thirty-four new maps, helpful notes, and numerous charts and photographs.

Recognizing that anthropology -- the study of human beings and culture -- has deep roots in Western experience, this concise introduction to the topic... begins in antiquity, with such writers as Herodotus and Aristotle, then moves forward through the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the nineteenth century, when anthropological thought took on a more disciplined form. The twentieth century is, however, the central focus of the text -- the authors cover all of the main stands, including American, British, and French anthropological traditions. It also features chapters on the theory of archaeology, physical anthropology, and cultural anthropology. A History of Anthropological Theory is thus a remarkably comprehensive, accessible introduction to the field.

This overview of the history of anthropological theory provides a comprehensive history from antiquity through to the twenty-first century, with a focus... on the twentieth century and beyond. Unlike other volumes, it also offers a four-field introduction to theory. As a stand-alone text, or used in conjunction with the companion volume Readings for a History of Anthropological Theory, Erickson and Murphy offer a comprehensive, affordable, and contemporary introduction to anthropological theory. The third edition has been updated and fully revised throughout to closely parallel the presentation in the companion reader, making it easier to use both books in tandem. New original essays by contemporary theorists bring theories to life, and portraits of important theorists make it a handsome volume. Sources and suggested readings have been updated, and glossary definitions have been updated, streamlined, and standardized.

This is the first book to cover the entire history of social and cultural anthropology in a single volume. Beginning with a summary of the discipline in... the nineteenth century, exploring major figures such as Morgan and Tylor, it goes on to provide a comprehensive overview of the discipline in the twentieth century. The bulk of the book is devoted to themes and controversies characteristic of post First World War anthropology, from structural functionalism via structuralism to hermeneutics, cultural ecology, discourse analysis and, most recently, globalization and postmodernism. The authors emphasise throughout the need to see changes in the discipline in a wider social, political and intellectual context. This is a timely, concise history of a major discipline, in an engaging and thought-provoking narrative, that will appeal to students of anthropology worldwide.

" Richard Drake has skillfully woven together the various strands of the Appalachian experience into a sweeping whole. Touching upon folk traditions,... health care, the environment, higher education, the role of blacks and women, and much more, Drake offers a compelling social history of a unique American region. The Appalachian region, extending from Alabama in the South up to the Allegheny highlands of Pennsylvania, has historically been characterized by its largely rural populations, rich natural resources that have fueled industry in other parts of the country, and the strong and wild, undeveloped land. The rugged geography of the region allowed Native American societies, especially the Cherokee, to flourish. Early white settlers tended to favor a self-sufficient approach to farming, contrary to the land grabbing and plantation building going on elsewhere in the South. The growth of a market economy and competition from other agricultural areas of the country sparked an economic decline of the region's rural population at least as early as 1830. The Civil War and the sometimes hostile legislation of Reconstruction made life even more difficult for rural Appalachians. Recent history of the region is marked by the corporate exploitation of resources. Regional oil, gas, and coal had attracted some industry even before the Civil War, but the postwar years saw an immense expansion of American industry, nearly all of which relied heavily on Appalachian fossil fuels, particularly coal. What was initially a boon to the region eventually brought financial disaster to many mountain people as unsafe working conditions and strip mining ravaged the land and its inhabitants. A History of Appalachia also examines pockets of urbanization in Appalachia. Chemical, textile, and other industries have encouraged the development of urban areas. At the same time, radio, television, and the internet provide residents direct links to cultures from all over the world. The author looks at the process of urbanization as it belies commonly held notions about the region's rural character.

In its original edition, Bruce Trigger's book was the first ever to examine the history of archaeological thought from medieval times to the present in... world-wide perspective. Now, in this new edition, he both updates the original work and introduces new archaeological perspectives and concerns. At once stimulating and even-handed, it places the development of archaeological thought and theory throughout within a broad social and intellectual framework. The successive but interacting trends apparent in archaeological thought are defined and the author seeks to determine the extent to which these trends were a reflection of the personal and collective interests of archaeologists as these relate - in the West at least - to the fluctuating fortunes of the middle classes. While subjective influences have been powerful, Professor Trigger argues that the gradual accumulation of archaeological data has exercised a growing constraint on interpretation. In turn, this has increased the objectivity of archaeological research and enhanced its value for understanding the entire span of human history and the human condition in general.

When the late Spiro Kostof's A History of Architecture appeared in 1985, it was universally hailed as a masterpiece--one of the finest books on... architecture ever written. Now, updated and expanded, this classic reference continues to bring to readers the full array of civilization's architectural achievements. Insightful, engagingly written and graced with close to a thousand superb illustrations, the Second Edition of this extraordinary volume offers a sweeping narrative that examines architecture as it reflects the social, economic, and technological aspects of human history. The scope of the book is astonishing. Kostof examines a surprisingly wide variety of man-made structures: prehistoric huts and the TVA, the pyramids of Giza and the Rome railway station, the ziggurat and the department store. Kostof considered every building worthy of attention, every structure a potential source of insight, whether it be prehistoric hunting camps at Terra Amata, or the caves at Lascaux with their magnificent paintings, or a twenty-story hotel on the Las Vegas Strip.

Recent debates on the place of the arts in American life has refocused attention on art education in schools. In this book, the author puts current... debate and concerns in a well-researched historical perspective. He examines the institutional settings of art education throughout Western history, the social forces that have shaped it and the evolution and impact of alternate streams of influence on present practice. The book treats the visual arts in relation to developments in general education and particular emphasis is placed on the 19th and 20th centuries and on the social context that has affected our concept of art today. The book is intended as a main text in history of art education courses, as a supplemental text in courses in art education methods and history of education, and as a resource for students, professors and researchers.
