Paris is “the world capital of memory and desire,” concludes one of the writers in this intimate and insightful collection of memoirs of the city.... Living in Paris changed these writers forever. In thirty-two personal essays—more than half of which are here published for the first time—the writers describe how they were seduced by Paris and then began to see things differently. They came to write, to cook, to find love, to study, to raise children, to escape, or to live the way it’s done in French movies; they came from the United States, Canada, and England; from Iran, Iraq, and Cuba; and—a few—from other parts of France. And they stayed, not as tourists, but for a long time; some are still living there. They were outsiders who became insiders, who here share their observations and revelations. Some are well-known writers: Diane Johnson, David Sedaris, Judith Thurman, Joe Queenan, and Edmund White. Others may be lesser known but are no less passionate on the subject. Together, their reflections add up to an unusually perceptive and multifaceted portrait of a city that is entrancing, at times exasperating, but always fascinating. They remind us that Paris belongs to everyone it has touched, and to each in a different way.

This dynamic and comprehensive text from two nationally renowned scholars continues to demonstrate the profound influence African Americans have had --... and continue to have -- on American politics.   Through the use of two interrelated themes–the idea of universal freedom and the concept of minority-majority coalitions–the text demonstrates how the presence of Africans in the United States affected the founding of the Republic and its political institutions and processes.  The authors show that through the quest for their own freedom in the United States, African Americans have universalized and expanded the freedoms for all Americans.

During the years from 1789 to 1801, the republican political institutions forged by the American Constitution were put to the test. A new nation - born... in revolution, divided over the nature of republicanism, undermined by deep-seated sectional allegiances, and mired in foreign policy entanglements - faced the challenge of creating a stable, enduring national authority and union. In this engagingly written book, James Roger Sharp offers a penetrating new assessment disputing the conventional wisdom that the birth of the country was a relatively painless and unexceptional one. Instead, he tells the dramatic story of how the euphoria surrounding the inauguration of George Washington as the country's first president quickly soured. Soon, the Federalist defenders of the administration and their Republican critics regarded each other as bitter political enemies. The intense partisanship prevented the acceptance of the idea that an opposition could both oppose and be loyal to the government. As a result, the nation teetered on the brink of disintegration as fear, insurrection, and threats of secession abounded. Many even envisioned armed civil conflict as a possible outcome. Despite the polarization the nation did manage to survive its first trial. The election of Thomas Jefferson in 1801 and the nonviolent transfer of power from one political group to another ended the immediate crisis. But sectionally based politics continued to plague the nation and eventually led to the Civil War.

Often Gilded-Age politics has been described as devoid of content or accomplishment, a mere spectacle to divert voters from thinking about the real... issues of the day. But by focusing too closely on dramatic scandals and on the foibles of prominent politicians, many historians have tended to obscure other aspects of late nineteenth-century politics that proved to be of great and long-term significance. With the latest scholarship in mind, Professor Cherny provides a deft and highly readable analysis that is certain to help readers better understand the characteristics and important products of Gilded-Age politics including voting behavior, the relation between the popular will and the formation of public policy, the cause and effect of the deadlock of national politics that lasted from the mid-1870s to the 1890s, the sources of political innovation at state and local levels, and the notable changes wrought during the 1890s that ushered in important new forms of American politics. "Robert Cherny has written a crisp, well-informed, and incisive treatment of Gilded Age politics that will provide a new generation of students with a lucid introduction to key issues of the emerging industrial society of the late 19th century. Balanced and judicious, Cherny's narrative should stimulate many classroom discussions about the meaning of the era that culminated with the victory of William McKinley and the Republicans."--Lewis L. Gould, The University of Texas at Austin

This stunningly persuasive book examines the persistent, radical gap between the promise of American ideals and the performance of American politics.... Samuel P. Huntington shows how Americans, throughout their history as a nation, have been united by the democratic creed of liberty, equality, and hostility to authority. At the same time he reveals how, inevitably, these ideals have been perennially frustrated through the institutions and hierarchies required to carry on the essential functions of governing a democratic society. From this antagonism between the ideals of democracy and the realities of power have risen four great political upheavals in American history. Every third generation, Huntington argues, Americans have tried to reconstruct their institutions to make them more truly reflect deeply rooted national ideals. Moving from the clenched fists and mass demonstrations of the 1960s, to the moral outrage of the Progressive and Jacksonian Eras, back to the creative ideological fervor of the American Revolution, he incisively analyzes the dissenters' objectives. All, he pungently writes, sought to remove the fundamental disharmony between the reality of government in America and the ideals on which the American nation was founded. Huntington predicts that the tension between ideals and institutions is likely to increase in this country in the future. And he reminds us that the fate of liberty and democracy abroad is intrinsically linked to the strength of our power in world affairs. This brilliant and controversial analysis deserves to rank alongside the works of Tocqueville, Bryce, and Hofstadter and will become a classic commentary on the meaning of America.

Politics is about conflict. Are your students cynical about conflict in American politics? Do they believe politicians generally fight for the sake of... fighting, or to gain short-term advantage? Do they believe policy makers should simply set aside their differences and “listen to what the people want”? Bianco and Canon show students that conflict—and the compromise that is necessary to resolve it—is a normal, healthy part of the process that makes American democracy work.
