Greek and Roman warfare was unlike that of any other culture before or since. The key difference is often held to be that the Greeks and Romans... practiced a "Western Way of War," in which the aim is an open, decisive battle--won by courage instilled, in part, by discipline. Here, Harry Sidebottom looks at how this Western Way of War was constructed and maintained by the Greeks and Romans and why this concept is so prevalent today. All aspects of ancient warfare are thoroughly examined--from philosophy and strategy to the technical skills needed to fight. Sidebottom examines war in the wider context, showing how wars were able to shape classical society, and how an individual's identity was sometimes constructed by war, as in the case of the Christian soldier fighting in God's name. He also explores the ways in which ancient society thought about conflict: Can a war be just? Why was siege warfare particularly bloody? What role did divine intervention play in the outcome of a battle? Taking fascinating examples from the iliad, Tacitus, and the Persian Wars, Sidebottom uses arresting anecdotes and striking visual images to show that any understanding of ancient war is an ongoing process of interpretation.

The history of civilization is, in many ways, the history of wine. This book is the first comprehensive and up-to-date account of the earliest stages of... vinicultural history and prehistory, which extends back into the Neolithic period and beyond. Elegantly written and richly illustrated, Ancient Wine opens up whole new chapters in the fascinating story of wine and the vine by drawing upon recent archaeological discoveries, molecular and DNA sleuthing, and the texts and art of long-forgotten peoples. Patrick McGovern takes us on a personal odyssey back to the beginnings of this consequential beverage when early hominids probably enjoyed a wild grape wine. We follow the course of human ingenuity in domesticating the Eurasian vine and learning how to make and preserve wine some 7,000 years ago. Early winemakers must have marveled at the seemingly miraculous process of fermentation. From success to success, viniculture stretched out its tentacles and entwined itself with one culture after another (whether Egyptian, Iranian, Israelite, or Greek) and laid the foundation for civilization itself. As medicine, social lubricant, mind-altering substance, and highly valued commodity, wine became the focus of religious cults, pharmacopoeias, cuisines, economies, and society. As an evocative symbol of blood, it was used in temple ceremonies and occupies the heart of the Eucharist. Kings celebrated their victories with wine and made certain that they had plenty for the afterlife. (Among the colorful examples in the book is McGovern's famous chemical reconstruction of the funerary feast--and mixed beverage--of "King Midas.") Some peoples truly became "wine cultures." When we sip a glass of wine today, we recapitulate this dynamic history in which a single grape species was harnessed to yield an almost infinite range of tastes and bouquets. Ancient Wine is a book that wine lovers and archaeological sleuths alike will raise their glasses to.

At a time and in a culture where science and technology have taken over from religious belief, when ethics are understood primarily in terms of... aesthetic choice or legality, how are we to formulate moral principles to guide us in our daily lives? Though religion can certainly help in this, the Dalai Lama demonstrates that there are universal principles we can draw on which transcend the dilemma of belief or unbelief. And whilst many have been content to speak of spiritual matters as something mysterious or evanescent, the Dalai Lama explains his approach in terms that are as clear and concise as they are compelling. With wit, gentle good sense and with penetrating insight, the Dalai Lama shows how the truths that have stood the test of generations of practise can provide us with the tools to live happy, fulfilled and meaningful lives. In the process, it becomes apparent that he does not merely espouse the 'feelgood' religiosity some accuse him of. The reader is left admiring not just the wisdom of the author, but the wisdom of the culture he represents.

This comprehensive chronicle of the history of the ancient Mediterranean (from Sumer to the fall of Rome) explores the distinctive forms society took in the ancient world—especially the unusual relationship between society and the state (unlike anything we encounter today) that characterized the social order of antiquity. By closely integrating social and cultural histories with the political, institutional, and military climates in which they unfolded, this book provides fascinating insights into family, gender relations, class structures, public vs. private realms, slavery, popular culture, religion, art, architecture, leisure styles, philosophy, science, and education—and their complex relationships to ideology and political events. An excellent resource for anyone interested in politics and culture; this book is a font of information; if we understand the past, we can understand the changes that politics and society have undergone, and the reasons for those changes.

and a body to remember with effectively combines elements of our Pulp past and Arsenal Pulp present. This is a collection of stories about rebellion and... activism, while at the same time stories about the immigrant experience and emotional turmoil. Carmen Rodríguez explores place and language in this illuminating short-story collection based on her life as a political exile in Canada. The stories also form an intriguing document of self-translation: Carmen has lived in Chile and Canada, speaks Spanish and English, has written these stories in Spanish and English, and because of this has created a system of internal translation. Some of these pieces were first written in Spanish, others in English. Carmen found herself translating the stories back and forth, discovering new words and finding new ways of communicating her thoughts and feelings into another language, until Carmen "felt that both tips of my tongue and my two sets of ears were satisfied with the final product." and a body to remember with includes: a story about fleeing the enemy through the night-time jungle; a story about a woman, in a new place, who is tormented by her past when a shadowy figure begins following her around her new city; stories about suddenly leaving family and friends behind when a woman is forced to escape, narrowly, with her life; stories about the struggle to establish one's self, one's family, in a new country, a new culture, a new language; emotional stories of memory, love, longing, danger, dissent; political stories of activism, rebellion, retribution. And through it all resonates the voice of a woman determined to make the world into a reasonable, just, and safe place, whether in war-torn Chile, or foreign-like Canada. Evoking a Borges, dream-like quality, these are stories about women in transition, whose lives are conflicted by history, both personal and political. As a storyteller, Carmen maps the emotional terrain of dual geographies—caught between two worlds, her protagonists look for redemption in the simple truths of love and honour, whether amid the political turmoil of Chile, or the torment of estrangment in Canada. and a body to remember with was simultaneously published in Spanish as De Cuerpo Entero by Editorial Los Andes in Santiago, Chile.
