This book introduces concepts from the field of behavior genetics at a level readily comprehended by upper-division undergraduates, or graduate students... from a variety of disciplines including Psychology, Biology, Chemistry, Anthropology and Sociology. The text begins with a brief introduction to the field of behavior genetics, including some historical insight. Subsequent chapters build a basic understanding of genetics, beginning with the molecular structure of DNA and how it is organized into genes that then direct protein structure and function. Readers are then guided into an explanation of how genes may directly influence the neurons from which behaviors originate. One chapter is dedicated to describing methods used in the discovery process of basic genetic research. Having established an understanding of how genes influence neural processes responsible for behavior, concepts of hereditary patterns are then introduced. Two chapters are dedicated to heredity research spanning basic Mendelian patterns to more complex concepts of multiple-gene inheritance. A third chapter describes the influence of environmental factors on inheritance patterns, with an additional chapter dedicated to describing methodological approaches to studying hereditary patterns. With a solid foundation established for understanding genetics and heredity, a sequence of five chapters applies earlier concepts to both normal and abnormal behaviors associated with cognition, mood, and sexual behaviors. Health issues including cardiovascular stress disorders, eating disorders, and addictions are also discussed. The book concludes with two chapters on practical application of behavior genetics, including insight into careers and the future of this rapidly expanding field.

This textbook helped to define the field of Behavioural Ecology. In this fourth edition the text has been completely revised, with new chapters and many... new illustrations and full colour photographs. The theme, once again, is the influence of natural selection on behaviour – an animal's struggle to survive and reproduce by exploiting and competing for resources, avoiding predators, selecting mates and caring for offspring, – and how animal societies reflect both cooperation and conflict among individuals.Stuart A. West has joined as a co-author bringing his own perspectives and work on microbial systems into the book.Written in the same engaging and lucid style as the previous editions, the authors explain the latest theoretical ideas using examples from micro-organisms, invertebrates and vertebrates. There are boxed sections for some topics and marginal notes help guide the reader. The book is essential reading for students of behavioural ecology, animal behaviour and evolutionary biology.Key Features:Long-awaited new edition of a field-defining textbook New chapters, illustrations and colour photographs New co-author Focuses on the influence of natural selection on behavior, and how animal societies reflect both cooperation and conflict among individuals Visit www.wiley.com/go/davies/behaviouralecology to access the artwork from the book.“The long-awaited update to a classic in this field is now here, presenting new directions in thinking and addressing burning questions. Richly informed by progress in many other disciplines, such as sensory physiology, genetics and evolutionary theory, it marks the emergence of behavioural ecology as a fully fledged discipline….. This is a marvellous book, written in a lucid style. A must-read for those in the field, it is also a cornucopia of new thinking for anyone interested in evolution and behaviour.”Manfred Milinski, Nature, 2012

The choice of vocabulary and grammar, in this book, is essentially an introduction to the prose, not the poetical language. Generous use of ... transliteration is meant to serve three purposes: it enables the reader to perceive Hebrew as a language and not an exercise in decipherment, it removes the obstacles to mastering innumerable pages of abstract phonological and orthographic details, and facilitate the memorization of the paradigms.

To a reader of Joyce's Ulysses, it makes a difference whether one of Stephen Dedalus's first thoughts is "No mother" (as in the printed version) or "No,... mother!" (as in the manuscript). The scholarship surrounding such textual differences--and why this discipline should concern readers and literary scholars alike--is the focus of William Proctor Williams and Craig S. Abbott's acclaimed handbook. This updated, fourth edition outlines the study of texts' composition, revision, physical embodiments, process of transmission, and manner of reception; describes how new technologies such as digital imaging and electronic tagging have changed the way we produce, read, preserve, and research texts; discusses why these matters are central to a historical understanding of literature; and shows how the insights, methods, and products of bibliographical and textual studies can be applied to other branches of scholarship.

This introductory text offers a clear exposition of the algorithmic principles driving advances in bioinformatics. Accessible to students in both... biology and computer science, it strikes a unique balance between rigorous mathematics and practical techniques, emphasizing the ideas underlying algorithms rather than offering a collection of apparently unrelated problems. The book introduces biological and algorithmic ideas together, linking issues in computer science to biology and thus capturing the interest of students in both subjects. It demonstrates that relatively few design techniques can be used to solve a large number of practical problems in biology, and presents this material intuitively. An Introduction to Bioinformatics Algorithms is one of the first books on bioinformatics that can be used by students at an undergraduate level. It includes a dual table of contents, organized by algorithmic idea and biological idea; discussions of biologically relevant problems, including a detailed problem formulation and one or more solutions for each; and brief biographical sketches of leading figures in the field. These interesting vignettes offer students a glimpse of the inspirations and motivations for real work in bioinformatics, making the concepts presented in the text more concrete and the techniques more approachable.PowerPoint presentations, practical bioinformatics problems, sample code, diagrams, demonstrations, and other materials can be found at the Author's website.

Written for a general college audience, this book offers an introduction to the principles and significance of Darwinian evolution. It differs from most... other textbooks on evolution in three fundamental ways: First, it is intended for students taking evolution early in their studies. Second, it examines the intellectual significance of Darwinian evolution. Third, the text departs from the standard treatment of evolution in other textbooks, wherein the arguments are reductionist, molecular, and overwhelmingly genetic in emphasis. Ken Kardong, also author of Vertebrates; Comparative Anatomy, Function, Evolution, is known for his accessible writing style. His almost conversational approach to this topic puts the reader at ease while learning evolutionary concepts. The result is an inviting book -- that will be read.
