This book first discusses the nature of Comparative Law, its functions, aims, methods and history, then surveys the main features of the major legal... families of the world. Extremely well written, this text outlines all the major legal systems of the world and details individual areas of law within these systems. Its prior edition has been highly regarded world-wide since its publication and was translated into many languages including Italian, Japanese and Russian. This third edition has been updated and contains useful new material including a chapter on Japanese Law. It has been skillfully translated from the German by Tony Weir. A key resource, this text provides the framework for a study of comparative law.

While in Plato’s time there may have been some truth to his belief that there can only be "one single justice, and one single law," such is not... the case today. Criminal justice systems vary widely across the world in their approaches to the problem of crime. Bringing together the collective wisdom of Cliff Roberson and Dilip K. Das, two world-renowned experts and university professors who have been involved in the criminal justice system for over thirty years, An Introduction to Comparative Legal Models of Criminal Justice presents the theme that a country’s legal model to a great extent determines the character of its police and corrections as well as its legal system. This book examines these different systems and is a useful reference guide for all criminal justice professionals. Examines Various Approaches The book begins with a brief overview of the five legal models. The continental (civil) system, characterized by an inquisitorial nature and practiced in most European countries, is discussed, followed by the common law model, which is known for its adversarial quality and is used in most English-speaking countries. The religion-based Islamic system and the rehabilitation-oriented Marxist system are also profiled. Those systems that are still emerging or are hybrid in nature are characterized as mixed. In some cases, the secretive nature of certain countries’ methods, especially those using extreme punishments, necessitated reliance on reports published by the U.S. State Department. By examining how other societies deal with problems of justice, criminal justice professionals will gain insight as to which police and corrections methods are likely to be the most successful in their jurisdictions, and which will create more problems than they solve.

A number of monographs of various aspects of complex analysis in several variables have appeared since the first version of this book was published, but... none of them uses the analytic techniques based on the solution of the Neumann Problem as the main tool. The additions made in this third, revised edition place additional stress on results where these methods are particularly important. Thus, a section has been added presenting Ehrenpreis' ``fundamental principle'' in full. The local arguments in this section are closely related to the proof of the coherence of the sheaf of germs of functions vanishing on an analytic set. Also added is a discussion of the theorem of Siu on the Lelong numbers of plurisubharmonic functions. Since the L2 techniques are essential in the proof and plurisubharmonic functions play such an important role in this book, it seems natural to discuss their main singularities.

This book provides a rigorous yet elementary introduction to the theory of analytic functions of a single complex variable. While presupposing in its... readership a degree of mathematical maturity, it insists on no formal prerequisites beyond a sound knowledge of calculus. Starting from basic definitions, the text slowly and carefully develops the ideas of complex analysis to the point where such landmarks of the subject as Cauchy's theorem, the Riemann mapping theorem, and the theorem of Mittag-Leffler can be treated without sidestepping any issues of rigor. The emphasis throughout is a geometric one, most pronounced in the extensive chapter dealing with conformal mapping, which amounts essentially to a "short course" in that important area of complex function theory. Each chapter concludes with a wide selection of exercises, ranging from straightforward computations to problems of a more conceptual and thought-provoking nature.

This new edition has been greatly enlarged and updated to provide both scientists and engineers with a clear and comprehensive understanding of... composite materials. In describing both theoretical and practical aspects of their production, properties and usage, the book crosses the borders of many disciplines. Topics covered include: fibers, matrices, laminates and interfaces; elastic deformation, stress and strain, strength, fatigue crack propagation and creep resistance; toughness and thermal properties; fatigue and deterioration under environmental conditions; fabrication and applications. Coverage has been increased to include polymeric, metallic and ceramic matrices and reinforcement in the form of long fibers, short fibers and particles. Designed primarily as a teaching text for final year undergraduates in materials science and engineering, this book will also interest undergraduates and postgraduates in chemistry, physics, and mechanical engineering. In addition, it will be an excellent source book for academic and technological researchers on materials.

This new book builds on the original classic textbook entitled: An Introduction to Computational Fluid Mechanics by C. Y. Chow which was originally... published in 1979. In the decades that have passed since this book was published the field of computational fluid dynamics has seen a number of changes in both the sophistication of the algorithms used but also advances in the computer hardware and software available. This new book incorporates the latest algorithms in the solution techniques and supports this by using numerous examples of applications to a broad range of industries from mechanical and aerospace disciplines to civil and the biosciences. The computer programs are developed and available in MATLAB. In addition the core text provides up-to-date solution methods for the Navier-Stokes equations, including fractional step time-advancement, and pseudo-spectral methods.
