Recent traumatic events in the financial markets, such as the fall of Enron, World Com, and Arthur Andersen, have led to an increased emphasis on... corporate governance and on the regulatory bodies overseeing the capital markets and the financial professions. This emphasis is reflected in accounting and business curricula across the nation. Educational materials that appropriately highlight the importance of the SEC, as well as the new laws that apply to corporate reporting, ethics, and guidelines for corporate governance, are scarce, despite their increasingly important role. Few titles that can serve as either a supplement or as a primary text exist that focus on the SEC as the body for overseeing financial reporting and corporate responsibilities.

Accessible yet theoretically rich, this landmark text introduces key concepts and issues in critical discourse analysis and situates these within the... field of educational research. The book invites readers to consider the theories and methods of three major traditions in critical discourse studies – discourse analysis, critical discourse analysis, and multimodal discourse analysis -- through the empirical work of leading scholars in the field. Beyond providing a useful overview, it contextualizes CDA in a wide range of learning environments and identifies how CDA can shed new insights on learning and social change. Detailed analytic procedures are included – to demystify the process of conducting CDA, to invite conversations about issues of trustworthiness of interpretations and their value to educational contexts, and to encourage researchers to build on the scholarship in critical discourse studies. This edition features a new structure; a touchstone chapter in each section by a recognized expert (Gee, Fairclough, Kress); and a stronger international focus on both theories and methods. NEW! Companion Website with Chapter Extensions; Interviews; Bibliographies; and Resources for Teaching Critical Discourse Analysis.

Winner of the 2005 Book Prize from the Association for Humanist SociologyIn this absorbing account of New York’s famous vacation playground, Corey... Dolgon goes beyond the celebrity tales and polo games to tell us the story of this complex and contentious land. From the displacement of Native Americans by the Puritans to the first wave of Manhattan elites who built the Summer Colony, to the current infusion of telecommuting Manhattanites who now want to live there year-round, the story of the Hamptons is a vicious cycle of supposed paradise lost. Drawing on this fabled land's history, The End of the Hamptons provides a fascinating portrait of current controversies: the Native Americans fighting over land claims and threatening to build a casino, the environmental activists clashing with the McMansion builders, and the Latino day laborers and working-class natives trying to eke out a living in an ever-increasingly expensive town.

Data structures and algorithms are presented at the college level in a highly accessible format that presents material with one-page displays in a way... that will appeal to both teachers and students. The thirteen chapters cover: Models of Computation, Lists, Induction and Recursion, Trees, Algorithm Design, Hashing, Heaps, Balanced Trees, Sets Over a Small Universe, Graphs, Strings, Discrete Fourier Transform, Parallel Computation. Key features: Complicated concepts are expressed clearly in a single page with minimal notation and without the "clutter" of the syntax of a particular programming language; algorithms are presented with self-explanatory "pseudo-code." * Chapters 1-4 focus on elementary concepts, the exposition unfolding at a slower pace. Sample exercises with solutions are provided. Sections that may be skipped for an introductory course are starred. Requires only some basic mathematics background and some computer programming experience. * Chapters 5-13 progress at a faster pace. The material is suitable for undergraduates or first-year graduates who need only review Chapters 1 -4. * This book may be used for a one-semester introductory course (based on Chapters 1-4 and portions of the chapters on algorithm design, hashing, and graph algorithms) and for a one-semester advanced course that starts at Chapter 5. A year-long course may be based on the entire book. * Sorting, often perceived as rather technical, is not treated as a separate chapter, but is used in many examples (including bubble sort, merge sort, tree sort, heap sort, quick sort, and several parallel algorithms). Also, lower bounds on sorting by comparisons are included with the presentation of heaps in the context of lower bounds for comparison-based structures. * Chapter 13 on parallel models of computation is something of a mini-book itself, and a good way to end a course. Although it is not clear what parallel

This introduction to decision theory offers comprehensive and accessible discussions of decision-making under ignorance and risk, the foundations of... utility theory, the debate over subjective and objective probability, Bayesianism, causal decision theory, game theory, and social choice theory. No mathematical skills are assumed, and all concepts and results are explained in non-technical and intuitive as well as more formal ways. There are over 100 exercises with solutions, and a glossary of key terms and concepts. An emphasis on foundational aspects of normative decision theory (rather than descriptive decision theory) makes the book particularly useful for philosophy students, but it will appeal to readers in a range of disciplines including economics, psychology, political science and computer science.

Now in a completely new and updated edition, this introduction to the development of modern (and postmodern) design is ideal for undergraduate students.... Divided into four parts, the book covers the major periods in design culture since the start of the twentieth century, beginning by examining the formative years 1900-1914. Two sections on design and modernity explore the periods 1915-1939 and 1939-1969, and a completely new section, design and postmodernity, covers 1970 to the present. New to this edition are: key discussions on postmodernism and design the alliance between technology and design the relationship between identity and design. Drawing on a wealth of mass-produced artifacts, images and environments including sewing machines, cars, televisions, clothes, electronic and branded goods and exhibitions, Sparke shows how design has helped to shape and reflect our social and cultural development.

This is a twenty-first century book designed to meet the challenges of understanding and solving interdisciplinary problems. The book creatively... incorporates "cutting-edge" research ideas and techniques at the undergraduate level. The book also is a unique research resource undergraduate/graduate students and interdisciplinary researchers. It emphasizes and exhibits the importance of conceptual understandings and its symbiotic relationship in the problem solving process. The book is proactive in preparing for the modeling of dynamic processes in various disciplines. It introduces a "break-down-the problem" type of approach in a way that creates "fun" and "excitement". The book presents many learning tools like "step-by-step procedures (critical thinking)", the concept of "math" being a language, applied examples from diverse fields, frequent recaps, flowcharts and exercises. Uniquely, this book introduces an innovative and unified method of solving nonlinear scalar differential equations. This is called the "Energy/Lyapunov Function Method". This is accomplished by adequately covering the standard methods with creativity beyond the entry level differential equations course.
