This classic introduction gives the student an insight into the amazing achievements of ancient Greece and at the same time, in a logical, thorough and... interesting manner, develops in that student the power to read Greek. In an effort to stimulate and to help the student empathize, the authors bring the ancient Greeks alive by incorporating Greek mottoes at the head of each lesson to indicate the universality of Greek thought. They introduce many notable writers through translation passages, and by the inclusion of specially selected exercises on derivations and word formation that show how vital Greek is in our everyday language and lives. Also available:Graphic Greek Grammar Cards - ISBN 0865165971Greek Readings for Review: First Lessons in Greek - ISBN 0865165491For over 30 years Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers has produced the highest quality Latin and ancient Greek books. The fragments of Greek sculpture and vase painting that have survived into the twentieth century are like pieces of a shattered mirror reflecting the... former glory of Greek art. Though some of the images are obviously beautiful, others require interpretation before their true quality can become apparent. This book, designed primarily as an introduction for students, helps the reader trace the development of Greek art in the immensely creative period from the eighth to the fourth century BC - the period between the composition of the Homeric poems and the conquests of Alexander the Great. Important works are generously illustrated and lucidly analysed, so that an integrated picture of Greek art emerges.

What Remains is a vivid and haunting memoir about a girl from a working-class town who becomes an award-winning television producer and marries a... prince, Anthony Radziwill. Carole grew up in a small suburb with a large, eccentric cast of characters. At nineteen, she struck out for New York City to find a different life. Her career at ABC News led her to the refugee camps of Cambodia, to a bunker in Tel Aviv, and to the scene of the Menendez murders. Her marriage led her into the old world of European nobility and the newer world of American aristocracy. What Remains begins with loss and returns to loss. A small plane plunges into the ocean carrying John F. Kennedy Jr., Anthony's cousin, and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, Carole's closest friend. Three weeks later Anthony dies of cancer. With unflinching honesty and a journalist's keen eye, Carole Radziwill explores the enduring ties of family, the complexities of marriage, the importance of friendship, and the challenges of self-invention. Beautifully written, What Remains "gets at the essence of what matters," wrote Oprah Winfrey. "Friendship, compassion, destiny."

This book presents a unified view of high-frequency time series methods with a particular emphasis on foreign exchange markets as well as interest spot... and futures markets. The scope of the book is also applicable to other markets, such as equity and commodity markets.
This book provides a framework to the analysis, modeling, and inference of high-frequency finanacial time series. It begins with the elementary foundations and definitions needed for studying the fundamential properties of high-frequency time series. It extends into adaptive data-cleaning issues, treatment of seasonal volatility, and modeling of intraday volatility. Fractal properties of the high-frequency time series are found and explored, and an intrinsic time is used to construct forecasting models. The book provides a detailed study of how the adopted framework can be effectively utilized to build econometric models of the price-formation process. Going beyond the price-formation process, the book presents the techniques to construct real-time trading models for financial assets. It is designed for those who might be starting research in the area as well as for those who are interested in appreciating the statistical and econometric theory that underlies high-frequency financial time series modeling.

This textbook is an introduction to the theory of Hilbert spaces and its applications. The notion of a Hilbert space is a central idea in functional... analysis and can be used in numerous branches of pure and applied mathematics. Dr. Young stresses these applications particularly for the solution of partial differential equations in mathematical physics and to the approximation of functions in complex analysis. Some basic familiarity with real analysis, linear algebra and metric spaces is assumed, but otherwise the book is self-contained. The book is based on courses given at the University of Glasgow and contains numerous examples and exercises (many with solutions). The book will make an excellent first course in Hilbert space theory at either undergraduate or graduate level and will also be of interest to electrical engineers and physicists, particularly those involved in control theory and filter design.

This book provides a much-needed thematic and historical introduction to Hinduism, the religion of the majority of people in India. Dr. Flood traces the... development of Hindu traditions from ancient origins and the major deities to the modern world. Hinduism as both a global religion and a form of nationalism are discussed. Emphasis is given to the tantric traditions, which have been so influential; to Hindu ritual, more fundamental than belief or doctrine; and to Dravidian influences. It introduces some debates within contemporary scholarship.

All languages change, just as other aspects of human society are constantly changing. This book is an introduction to the concepts and techniques of... diachronic linguistics, the study of language change over time. It covers all themajor areas of historical linguistics, presenting concepts in a clear and concise way. Examples are given from a wide range of languages, with special emphasis on the languages of Australia and the Pacific. While the needs of undergraduate students of linguistics have been kept firmly in mind, the book will also be of interest to the general reader seeking to understand langauge and language change. For this fourth edition, a number of new sections have been written, including many new problems and several datasets. Existing materials have been supplemented with new sections on grammaticalization, tonogenesis, morphological change, and using statistical methods in language classification.

The landscape of homological algebra has evolved over the past half-century into a fundamental tool for the working mathematician. This book provides a... unified account of homological algebra as it exists today. The historical connection with topology, regular local rings, and semi-simple Lie algebras is also described. The first half of the book takes as its subject the canonical topics in homological algebra: derived functors, Tor and Ext, projective dimensions and spectral sequences. Homology of group and Lie algebras illustrate these topics. Intermingled are less canonical topics, such as the derived inverse limit functor lim1, local cohomology, Galois cohomology, and affine Lie algebras. The last part of the book covers less traditional topics that are a vital part of the modern homological toolkit: simplicial methods, Hochschild and cyclic homology, derived categories and total derived functors.

Graduate mathematics students will find this book an easy-to-follow, step-by-step guide to the subject. Rotman’s book gives a treatment of homological... algebra which approaches the subject in terms of its origins in algebraic topology. In this new edition the book has been updated and revised throughout and new material on sheaves and cup products has been added. The author has also included material about homotopical algebra, alias K-theory. Learning homological algebra is a two-stage affair. First, one must learn the language of Ext and Tor. Second, one must be able to compute these things with spectral sequences. Here is a work that combines the two.
