Sound waves are the only practical means of remote investigation of the sea and its bottom and transmission in seawater. Underwater acoustics has become... one of the major technologies used in the exploration and exploitation of the oceans for scientific, industrial, or military/naval purposes. It is widely employed in the fields of ocean engineering, seafloor mapping, defence, oceanography, navigation, and fisheries. Dr Xavier Lurton is a renowned specialist in underwater acoustics. He has worked in this field as a scientist, engineer, project manager and teacher since 1981 and has participated in many scientific projects, systems developments and at-sea cruises. In the second edition of his book, Dr Lurton provides an updated and extended introduction to underwater acoustics, including coverage of the physical processes and their basic modeling, different underwater acoustic systems and their practical applications and a description and assessment of the various technologies. Dr Lurton has extensive experience as a lecturer in undergraduate and postgraduate schools, including naval academies. This book is based on his direct, first-hand experience of the many aspects of underwater acoustics in seas around the world, at the forefront of current research and development efforts.

This work gives a broad introductory overview of the topic of usability. Firstly, usability is defined and a framework for identifying different aspects... of usability is given. The main principles for creating usable designs are expounded, followed by practical advice as to how to design usable products. The book then tackles the issue of usability evaluation - a series of evaluation methods are described, followed by practical advice as to how to conduct the evaluation. The book draws on examples from software design and product design generally. This means whilst human-computer interaction HCI is a central issue in the book, other usability issues are also covered.

An Introduction to Vector Analysis is designed for a one semester or one quarter course in vector analysis (sometimes called vector calculus) for... undergraduates majoring in one of the sciences, engineering, or mathematics. The prerequisite is the usual calculus sequence taught in most universities in the United States. This book is written in an informal style, so it should also prove useful for self-study and for review. The author's aim has been to give a straightforward (and relatively brief) treatment of the basics of vector analysis at a level appropriate for the majority of students likely to take such a course in the United States. One noteworthy feature of the text is that the author has given (in an appendix) a treatment of differential forms and the modern version of Stokes' theorem that is accessible to students with modest mathematical backgrounds, i.e., only elementary calculus. The text contains over 350 exercises of varying degrees of difficulty. The solutions to almost all of the non-proof exercises are included.

Technological changes have radically altered the ways in which people use visual images. Since the invention of photography, imagery has increasingly... been used for entertainment, journalism, information, medical diagnostics, instruction, and communication. These functions move the image beyond aesthetic issues associated with art and into the realm of communication studies. This introductory textbook introduces students to the terminology of visual literacy, methods for analyzing visual media, and theories on the relationship between visual communication and culture. Exploring the meanings associated with visual symbols and the relationship of visual communication to culture, this book will provide students with a better understanding of the visually oriented world in which they live. Student-friendly features such as boxed topics, key terms, web resources, and suggestions for exercises are provided throughout.

An Introduction to Visual Culture provides a wide-ranging introduction to the now established interdisciplinary field of visual culture. Mapping a... global history and theory of visual culture, An Introduction to Visual Culture asks how and why visual media have become so central to everyday life. This new, completely updated second edition has been adapted to match the challenges of interpreting globalization since the publication of the first edition a decade ago. Improved text design and colour images throughout make it an even more valuable teaching tool. Brand new features in the second edition include Key Image studies from Holbein’s The Ambassadors, to Blade Runner and the Abu Ghraib atrocities; and a Key Words section in each chapter, discussing vital critical terms and the debates that surround them. In this innovative, thoroughly revised and extended edition, Nicholas Mirzoeff explores: an extensive range of visual forms from painting, sculpture, and photography to television, cinema, and the Internet the centrality of ‘race’ and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, and the body in shaping visual culture the importance of images of natural disaster and conflict, such as Hurricane Katrina and the ongoing war in Iraq.

Advances in digital technology over the past two decades have created a wide array of new media platforms, channels, and delivery mechanisms. Through... these, people can receive staggering amounts of content. As a result, both consumers and producers of media have exciting new options in creating and acquiring content. An Introduction to Visual Theory and Practice in the Digital Age is designed to prepare students for becoming producers of sophisticated digital media. It combines elements of visual theory and design with the practice of creating interactive media content. A framework for working in the digital world is also provided: students are asked to consider the legal, ethical, and historical aspects of visual theory and design and then combine those concepts with visual design principles and proper composition of still images, video, and sound. Real-world examples are provided, with a section where media professionals explain how theory and practice are brought together. Designed as an introduction to the field, this book is suitable for undergraduate courses including those in multimedia journalism, visual communication, and mass communication practices.

An Introduction to Wavelets and Other Filtering Methods in Finance and Economics presents a unified view of filtering techniques with a special focus on... wavelet analysis in finance and economics. It emphasizes the methods and explanations of the theory that underlies them. It also concentrates on exactly what wavelet analysis (and filtering methods in general) can reveal about a time series. It offers testing issues which can be performed with wavelets in conjunction with the multi-resolution analysis. The descriptive focus of the book avoids proofs and provides easy access to a wide spectrum of parametric and nonparametric filtering methods. Examples and empirical applications will show readers the capabilities, advantages, and disadvantages of each method. *The first book to present a unified view of filtering techniques *Concentrates on exactly what wavelets analysis and filtering methods in general can reveal about a time series*Provides easy access to a wide spectrum of parametric and non-parametric filtering methods

For reasons unknown to us, most all the texbooks we use in Western Civilization courses follow the well-worn path of repeating information in an... unimaginative way. It is also unbelievable that for fear of controversy, textbooks have avoided the inclusion of new materials. For instance, they still tell us , as they told our fathers before us, Egyptians were a dark race but not Negros. They have accepted it for sometime. A race whose description is dark, with wooly hair, thick lips and flat noses as shown in Egyptian art is of necessity of the Negro race. The oldest human fossils, which would suggest that the oldest human species as we know today, originatyed in Africa. L.S.B. Leakey has publicized this fact, yet the information is still un avaiable in our textbooks. Time did not allow us to write a full-fledged textbook. We were compelled to limit our subjects to a few topcs, and introduce the student to new scholarships and opinions.

Clack provides a much-needed primer in Wittgenstein's thought as it relates to religious belief. This text provides a guide to the essentials of... Wittgenstein's philosophy and particularly his philosophy of religion. Students are introduced to the early and later work, and the different accounts of language and meaning they offer. The book provides an overview of Wittgenstein's writing on religion, a guide round the maze of his thinking on the subject and an assessment of his influence in contemporary debates. At a time when there continues to be enormous interest in all aspects of Wittgenstein's philosophy, and when his name is frequently cited in connection with radical developments in theology, this book comes as a timely analysis of the religious thinking of one of the twentieth century's most important and enigmatic intellectual figures.
