This reader contains some of the most notable and instructive scriptures of the major Asian religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism,... Confucianism, Taoism, Shinto, and Zoroastrianism. It is a comprehensive and pedagogically sound presentation of the sacred literature of the Asia. A clear and consistent organization makes the text easy-to-use and understand. The first chapter examines the general phenomenon of scripture in the world's religions, its nature, use, and place in modern scholarship. Chapter 1 also introduces the reader to the art of reading scripture with practical suggestions, a pronunciation guide for foreign words, and other pedagogical aids. Each subsequent chapter presents the scripture of a single religion. Three or four vignettes about scripture and its usage open the chapter to draw the reader's interest and imagination. Then an introduction sets the context by explaining the overall structure, origin, development, and use of the scripture in its religion.

Internationally renowned Chinese literature scholar Cyril Birch was the first to assemble the finest translations of these seminal pieces in his now... classic and still definitive introductory anthologies. The selections in this first volume span a two-thousand-year period: from the Chou Dynasty (1122221 B.C.) to the Y’an Dynasty (A.D. 12801367), from the ancient Songs to the dramas of the fourteenth century, every major genre of Chinese literature is represented by a crucial work. Highlights include, in addition to the great poems of the T’ang, outstanding examples of Han poetry, Six Dynasties satire, T’ang-sung prose essays and fiction, and the form of lyric known as tz’u.”

This volume is designed as a companion to the standard undergraduate mythology textbooks or, when assigned alongside the central Greek and Roman works,... as a source-based alternative to those textbooks. In addition to the complete texts of the Homeric Hymns and HesiodÂ’s Theogony, this collection provides generous selections from over 50 texts composed between the Archaic Age and the fourth century a.d. Ancient interpretation of myth is represented here in selections from the allegorists Heraclitus, Cornutus and Fulgentius, the rationalists Palaephatus and Diodorus of Sicily, and the philosophers and historians Plato, Herodotus and Thucydides. Appendices treat evidence from inscriptions, papyri and Linear B tablets and include a thematic index, a mythological dictionary, and genealogies. A thoughtful Introduction supports students working with the primary sources and the other resources offered here; an extensive note to instructors offers suggestions on how to incorporate this book into their courses.

The five plays contained within this volume represent a good sampling of that most difficult of genres in German-language literature: the Austrian... Volksstuck (folk play). It has its origins in the eighteenth century, but it has become a favorite of modern Austrian playwrights for good reasons. They can take full advantage of the tradition, which seems to aim its often critical message at those who seldom have the means to set foot in a theater proper. These playwrights take their case to a greater audience than the traditional theater could or can contain; in doing so, they reenact the great ritual of the folk play genre. - The timeless elements of greed, power and inhumanity are the dominant themes of the modern Volksstuck as they were of the older, somewhat tamer versions. - The plays of this collection articulate these themes against a background of modern Austria. Austria as it was under the Habsburgs, under the Nazis, and as it exists today, buffered by social and political forces which increasingly threaten to overwhelm the frail structures of social integrity and human decency.
