The fascinating evolution of house forms from the Stone Age to the present.[T]his fascinating survey...any designer or builder who deals with housing... would find a use for this book.' —Fine Homebuilding 'This is as essential reference to anyone in the field of housing, beautifully illustrated in the hand of the author.' —Moshe Safdie and Associates, Inc. Part architecture, part history, and part anthropology, this encyclopedic book limns the story of housing around the world from the pre-urban dwellings of nomadic, semi-nomadic, and sedentary agricultural societies to the present. Ancient urban dwellings were inward-looking, ranged around a courtyard. Until fairly recently, these dwelling types survived in indigenous urban house forms in the Islamic world, India, China, and the Iberian peninsula and Latin America. After the collapse of the Roman Empire, however, outward-looking house forms replaced the ancient form in most of Europe and the New World. In the Middle Ages houses served both as homes and as places of work, but gradually the domestic and business lives of the inhabitants became separate. In the wake of the Industrial Revolution, profound changes in the residential development of the western world occurred: housing became segregated along socioeconomic lines and dwelling types polarized, with low-density, single-family houses at one extreme, and tall, high-density, multifamily tenements and apartments at the other. Side effects of America’s automobile-intensive suburban dream housing include inefficient land use, pollution, and urban decay. 6,000 Years of Housing chronicles how this came about, and suggests solutions based on a rich variety of historical precedents.

"Getting old sucks," says best-selling author Dr. Lillian Rubin. With refreshing candor, she digs down under the statistics about our graying population... and offers a provocative and unflinching examination of all the burning issues that mark aging today. Tackling the subject over a broad swath of the population, cutting across race, class, gender, and physical and cognitive ability, Rubin delivers a powerful and long-overdue reminder that everyone will be touched by the problems arising from our new longevity."What does it mean that Americans now want to retire early, but typically live into their 90s? . . . Rubin, in her early 80s and a very good writer, explores the good news/bad news about greater longevity of today's Americans."—David Mehegan, Boston Globe"A sharp, brazenly honest exposé for the 78 million baby boomers who will grow old over the next two decades and can reasonably expect to survive into their 90s."—Cathleen Medwick, O Magazine"60 on Up is everything most books on aging are not. It is not sentimental, not filled with stale advice to keep busy, avoid calories, and think young. Instead, it offers authentic wisdom about the complexities of aging. Its fiercely realistic but tender explorations are strangely comforting because they relieve us of the burden of denial and give us a vision of facing our later years with dignity and courage."—Sam Keen, author of Fire in the Belly"With honesty, compassion and a large measure of wit and wisdom . . . Rubin describes in full the world of the elderly in America . . . Revealing and thought-provoking, this book makes a fine, thorough primer for middle-aged adults preparing for 'this business of getting old.'"—Publishers Weekly "For anyone in their fifties, sixties, or beyond, a new way to think about the rest of your life." —Alix Kates Shulman

Why has the 6+1 TRAIT model had such a tremendous impact on writing instruction? Because it works. It allows teachers to pinpoint students’ strengths... and weaknesses in ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, and presentation, and focus instruction. Now Culham turns her expert eye to our youngest students. Like her groundbreaking guide for grades 3 and up, her new book contains scoring guides, sample papers, and focus lessons for each trait, but framed to address K2 teachers’ needs. For use with Grades K-2.
