This work includes a study and a complete, annotated translation of the late twelfth- or early thirteenth-century Japanese tale collection, the Kara... monogatari (Tales of China). The twenty-seven tales are interesting as stories, literate as short written pieces, and important as a Japanese cultural source, as well as being of interest to students of China. The Kara monogatari gave Japanese readers vernacular translations of some of the most well-known stories about China. It offers an interesting example of the transition in Japanese literature from the uta monogatari (poem tale) form to the setsuwa bungaku (story literature) form.

In the 1940s and 1950s, long before historians fully accepted oral tradition as a source, Eve Ball (1890-1984) was taking down verbatim the accounts of... Apache elders who had survived the army's campaigns against them in the last century. These oral histories offer new versions--from Warm Springs, Chiricahua, Mescalero, and Lipan Apache--of events previously known only through descriptions left by non-Indians.A high school and college teacher, Ball moved to Ruidoso, New Mexico, in 1942. Her house on the edge of the Mescalero Apache Reservation was a stopping-off place for Apaches on the dusty walk into town. She quickly realized she was talking to the sons and daughters of Geronimo, Cochise, Victorio, and their warriors. After winning their confidence, Ball would ultimately interview sixty-seven people. Here is the Apache side of the story as told to Eve Ball. Including accounts of Victorio's sister Lozen, a warrior and medicine woman who was the only unmarried woman allowed to ride with the men, as well as unflattering portrayals of Geronimo's actions while under attack, and Mescalero scorn for the horse thief Billy the Kid, this volume represents a significant new source on Apache history and lifeways.

The APA Ethics Code Commentary and Case Illustrations is a comprehensive examination of the APA Ethics Code and the complex process of ethical decision... making. The authors describe the Standards of the Code, their application, and how the Code can guide psychologists when ethical dilemmas arise. Case illustrations are used throughout the book to demonstrate the process a psychologist will need to work through when confronted with an ethical dilemma. In a wide variety of case illustrations that address most of the 89 Standards of the Ethics Code, the authors describe a realistic scenario, identify the ethical dilemma, map out the decision-making factors, and present appropriate resolutions to the dilemma. This book is meant to specifically include commentary and case illustrations that are applicable to the many areas of psychology (e.g., consulting, forensic, education and training, research, organizational, public and private practice). The authors also closely examine how the specific ethical standards in the Code relate to its general principles (e.g., beneficence and nonmaleficence, fidelity and responsibility). The authors show that a thorough working knowledge of relevant rules, regulations, and professional codes of ethics, combined with a systematic method of approaching and resolving dilemmas are essential for the ethical practice of psychology. This book of commentary is a must-read for psychologists at all levels of professional experience, from beginning students to those whose entire professional lives have been devoted to the field of psychology. The authors encourage psychologists to accept the invitation offered in the preamble to the APA Ethics Code to embrace a lifelong commitment to the highest ethical standards in the profession of psychology.

A PAGAN PLACE is Edna O'Brien's true novel of Ireland. Here she returns to that uniquely wonderful, terrible, peculiar place she once called home and... writes not only of a life there--of the child becoming a woman--but of the Irish experience out of which that life arises--perhaps more pointedly than in any of her other works. This is the Ireland of country villages and barley fields, of druids in the woods, of unknown babies in the womb, of mischievous girls and Tans with guns. Ireland has marked Edna O'Brien's life and work with unmistakable color and depth, and here she recreates her homeland with a singular grace and intensity.

In these forty-two poems, Robin Robertson demonstrates an astonishing range of style and concerns, in a voice that is utterly original. Whether he is... rendering a dramatic new version of Ovid ("The Flaying of Marsyas") or celebrating the ambiguous pleasures of food ("Artichoke"), Robertson's poetry is always lucid, sensuous, and compelling. These are poems that speak of the wounds of memory, the implacable coupling of desire and loss, the fugitive nature of things. Elegant and profound, A Painted Field has proved a stunning debut.
