Since the photographs of the Dead Sea Scrolls were released in 1992, there has been an explosion of interest in them. This volume explores the issue of... apocalypticism in the Scrolls; how the notions of the 'end', Messianic expectation and eternal life affected the Dead Sea sect, influenced Judaism and filtered into Christianity. Collins' volume provides a valuable and accessible introduction to the interpretation of the Scrolls, which is an informative addition to the series examining the major themes of the Scroll texts.

The world of apocalyptic literature can be both vast and confusing. To journey successfully through its complexities, it is best to have an experienced... tour guide to direct you to the sites most representative of that world. In this way the new traveler can avoid dead ends, skip the fruitless excursions, and instead enjoy the ride. Reddish's introductions to the otherworldly writings of Judaism—including the War Scroll from Qumran and books such as 1 Enoch from the so-called Old Testament Pseudepigrapha—as well as to the apocalyptic documents of Christianity, including the noncanonical apocalypses of Peter, Paul, and James, and related works such as the Sibylline Oracles, are simply superb. Those wanting a more informed understanding of these centuries-old writings of hope and despair will not be disappointed."Reddish's selection limits the corpus to a range that can be covered in an undergraduate course. Charlesworth's [Old Testament Pseudepigrapha] edition will remain indispensable for the scholar and specialized student, but Reddish's presentation is surely more accessible to the nonspecialist."—John J. This hard-hitting and timely book explores the roots of militant Islam in South Asia and how it has grown to become a source of profound global alarm.... By meticulously tracking the rise of the jihadist movement from its initial violence in Afghanistan in 1980 to the present day, Dilip Hiro challenges conventional narratives of the roles of Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Soviet Union, the United States, and India. He warns that the Line of Control in Kashmir, where jihadists seek to incite war between nuclear-armed Pakistan and India, is today the most dangerous border in the world.Drawing on evidence from a wide variety of sources including newly released Kremlin archives and classified U.S. Embassy documents published by WikiLeaks, the author compiles the first complete and accurate history of Islamist terrorism in South Asia. He chronicles historic links between Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India and their varying degrees of destabilization at the hands of the jihadists. He also sheds unprecedented light on the close military and intelligence links that have developed between India and Israel. Finally, he outlines the ambitions of Pakistani, Afghan, and Al Qaeda jihadists to establish an "apocalyptic realm" covering South, Central, and Western Asia. Compact, comprehensive, and fast paced, this book lays bare the causes of today's escalating terrorist threat, sets the historical record straight, and offers fresh strategies for defeating jihadist extremism.

Finalist for the 2009 Los Angeles Times Book Prize in Poetry.Rarely has a first book of poems been more exalted than Gabrielle Calvocoressi’s The Last... Time I Saw Amelia Earhart, which the Times Literary Supplement called “an excoriation of present-day America by a new and lethal commentator.” Now, in this extraordinary follow-up, Calvocoressi continues her mission to document the particular hardships of derelict American small towns. These, though, are different poems, their lens cracked and turned on a narrator seeking her own deliverance from abandonment and violence. Battered but never beaten, this narrator finds salvation in ecstatic communion with the gods of jazz and especially boxing: “O Tommy Hearns, O blood come down,” she prays. “Find your way to Hungerford where my/father glowers over me. Show him/how the bag does penance.” In such prayers she finds the strength to survive the home she has to leave and, once she does, the strength to face the fires she finds flaring the country over, from Los Angeles to Laramie. Apocalyptic Swing is a work of unbelievable force, a devastating and glorious testimony about America—its lore, disappointments, and promise.

Rex Fortescue, king of a financial empire, was sipping tea in his “counting house” when he suffered an agonizing and sudden death. On later... inspection, the pockets of the deceased were found to contain traces of cereals. Yet, it was the incident in the parlor which confirmed Miss Marple’s suspicion that here she was looking at a case of crime by rhyme. . . .

Tiana has a pocketful of words: green words like spring, night words like moon, and words with wings, like angel. Each word is the inspiration for a... pair of poemsone, lyrical free verse and the other, haiku. The paired poems reflect Tiana’s lively spirit and urban outlook and are showcased in Javaka Steptoe’s inventive collages, which include a wide range of materials, from faucet handles to pumpkin seeds to a hand-sculpted, gilded alphabet. A fusion of two remarkable creative talents, A Pocketful of Poems is an engaging portrait of a down-to-earth girl who has a way with words, as well as a tantalizing introduction to poetry. Author’s note on haiku.

"The book is the place to turn for initial information and perspective on Alzheimer’s disease, and to return for practical advice as problems arise. ... Most importantly, however, it dispels the sense of hopelessness families may feel by providing steps to maximize the enjoyment of life for the person with Alzheimer’s disease." --- Robert C. This book tells you what experts assume you already know. The available pocket-sized and back-of-the-textbook Constitutions don’t do enough.... They format the Constitution like a short story. They leave out the names of articles, sections, and clauses. They leave out the standard numbering system. They don’t define basic terms. My students need this information, so familiar to lawyers and scholars. When I ask students to turn to the “Commerce Clause,” I want us to end up in the same place (Article 1, Section 8, Clause 3). And when we get there, I want them to know what it means. Most non-pocket guides have the opposite problem. They tend to be massive and impenetrable. Scholars and lawyers examine the Constitution case by case, topic by topic, amendment by amendment. They use a specialized language. They assume their readers already know the subject, as well as the legal and scholarly debates. But the Constitution is not only a matter of scholarly, legal debate; it is part of the way Americans live. It is how we understand our rights and obligations as people and as A People–every day. We need a guide that will fit in a pocket, briefcase, or backpack. We need a way to answer basic questions that arise day to day, or in a class period, or in the course of reading more in-depth books on the topic. This book is a place to begin to understand the United States Constitution. It is as complete as I can make it and still have it fit in your pocket. It’s as simple as I can make and still have it be accurate. Andrew B. Arnold, Ph.D. Kutztown, Pennsylvania
