Christians traditionally think of Satan as Lucifer, God's enemy, who rebelled against Him out of pride and then caused Adam and Eve to sin. But, as... Kelly shows, this portrayal is not biblical but a scenario invented by the early Fathers of the Church which became the 'New Biography of Satan'. The 'Original Biography' must be reconstructed from the New Testament where Satan is the same sort of celestial functionary we see in the Book of Job - appointed to govern the world, specifically to monitor and test human beings. But he is brutal and deceitful in his methods, and Jesus predicts that his rule will soon come to an end. Kelly traces the further developments of the 'New Biography': humankind's inherited guilt, captivity by Satan, and punishment in Hell at his hands. This profile of Satan remains dominant, but Kelly urges a return to the 'Original Biography of Satan'.

Eliminating the need for heavy number-crunching, sophisticated mathematical software packages open the door to areas like cryptography, coding theory,... and combinatorics that are dependent on abstract algebra. Applications of Abstract Algebra with Maple and MATLAB®, Second Edition explores these topics and shows how to apply the software programs to abstract algebra and its related fields.Carefully integrating Maple™ and MATLAB®, this book provides an in-depth introduction to real-world abstract algebraic problems. The first chapter offers a concise and comprehensive review of prerequisite advanced mathematics. The next several chapters examine block designs, coding theory, and cryptography while the final chapters cover counting techniques, including Pólya's and Burnside's theorems. Other topics discussed include the Rivest, Shamir, and Adleman (RSA) cryptosystem, digital signatures, primes for security, and elliptic curve cryptosystems.New to the Second EditionThree new chapters on Vigenère ciphers, the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), and graph theory as well as new MATLAB and Maple sectionsExpanded exercises and additional research exercisesMaple and MATLAB files and functions available for download online and from a CD-ROMWith the incorporation of MATLAB, this second edition further illuminates the topics discussed by eliminating extensive computations of abstract algebraic techniques. The clear organization of the book as well as the inclusion of two of the most respected mathematical software packages available make the book a useful tool for students, mathematicians, and computer scientists.

A solid introduction to applications of Lie groups to differential equations which have proved to be useful in practice. The computational methods are... presented such that graduates and researchers can readily learn to use them. Following an exposition of the applications, the book develops the underlying theory, with many of the topics presented in a novel way, emphasising explicit examples and computations. Further examples, as well as new theoretical developments, appear in the exercises at the end of each chapter.

This supplement contains many spreadsheet exercises correlating directly with sections in the text. The exercises teach students how to use Microsoft... Excel using applications from statistics, data analysis equilibrium calculations, curve fitting, and more. Operations include everything from basic arithmetic and cell formatting to Solver, Goal Seek, and the Data Analysis Toolpak. The authors show students how to use a spreadsheet to construct log diagrams and to plot the results. Statistical data treatment includes descriptive statistics, linear regression, hypothesis testing, and analysis of variance. Tutorial exercises include nonlinear regression such as fitting the Van Deemter equation, fitting kinetics data, determining error coefficients in spectrophotometry, and calculating titration curves. Additional features include solving complex systems of equilibrium equations and advanced graphical methods: error bars, charts with insets, matrices and determinants, and much more.

A groundbreaking book that offers approaches for changing the hidden biases in the workplaceThis is an eye-opening examination of the causes and... dynamics of bias in the workplace, offering a psychological, political, and societal analysis of the actual cost of bias to the bottom line. The authors make the hurdles that women and minorities face in the workplace as personal to the reader as they are to those who face them. Giving Notice is filled with sensible approaches for solving the current imbalance and challenges us to rethink unconscious ideas about stereotypes and commonly accepted business practices.Freada Kapor Klein (San Francisco, CA) is an internationally noted consultant and diversity expert. She has been quoted in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, and on the Today show, Nightline, and NBC Nightly News. Kimberly Allers (Bayshore, NY) was a writer at Fortune magazine and is a frequent guest speaker at professional development and women-oriented seminars. Martha Mendoza (Santa Cruz, CA) is a national writer for the Associated Press. She won a Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting.

This easy-to-use and practical book offers teachers 50 content area learning strategies--each with directions, models and templates to design effective... lessons that scaffold learning strategies with literacy enrichment for every child in the classroom. This 'teacher friendly' manual provides the models and templates for teachers to use in planning lessons on effective learning strategies for students to understand content level materials. In a non-threatening manner, this text offers a concise yet complete review of the research supporting each of the strategies contained in this book so that it can be used by teachers and administrators working with federal programs such as No Child Left Behind, Reading First, Title I, ESL programs, as well as IEP, resource and challenged learners. In addition, every chapter contains a brief review of research that supports the use of strategies for each area of comprehension 50 strategies are featured in what it will undoubtly become an indispensable book for any teacher. Proven favorites as well as new strategies which the authors have field tested in classrooms include: Stop the Process, Heading Through a Picture Walk, T.H.I.E.V.E.S., Four Square Reciprocal Teaching, Readers' Theatre, Grasp the Headings, Partner Knowledge Rater +, and First, the Questions.

For many practitioners, best practices are often developed through significant amounts of direct experience. However, they can also be developed through... the examination and application of research findings. By critically assessing existing studies within library and information science, both aspiring and experienced professionals can acquire a deeper understanding of available methods, as well as design more effective studies. In what is surely the first of its kind for librarians, Barbara Wildemuth has created a book that mirrors the process of conducting a research study; at the same time, she exposes the reader to a wealth of competing and complementary techniques. Each chapter introduces a particular research method, points out its relative strengths and weaknesses, and provides a critique of two or more exemplary studies. An invaluable guide for librarians, educators and students alike.Section One considers those research questions most often asked in the field of information and library science, and explains how they can arise from practice and direct observation or from existing theories. Section Two covers a variety of research designs, as well as the sampling issues associated with those designs: case studies, naturalistic research, longitudinal studies, Delphi studies, and quasi-experimental and experimental designs. Section Three moves on to methods for collecting data: surveys, various types of interviews, historical and documentary studies, transaction log analysis, diaries, and participant observation. It concludes with a chapter discussing the ways in which any of these methods might be combined for use in a particular study.
