This book is designed for use by students with a wide range of ability and maturity. The stronger the students, the harder the exercises that can be... assigned. The book can be used for one-quarter, two-quarter, or one-semester course depending on how much material is used.Combinatorical reasoning underlies all analysis of computer systems. It plays a similar role in discrete operations research problems and in finite probability. This book teaches students in the mathematical sciences how to reason and model combinatorically. It seeks to develop proficiency in basic discrete math problem solving in the way that a calculus textbook develops proficiency in basic analysis problem solving. The three principle aspects of combinatorical reasoning emphasized in this book are: the systematic analysis of different possibilities, the exploration of the logical structure of a problem (e.g. finding manageable subpieces or first solving the problem with three objects instead of n), and ingenuity. Although important uses of combinatorics in computer science, operations research, and finite probability are mentioned, these applications are often used solely for motivation. Numerical examples involving the same concepts use more interesting settings such as poker probabilities or logical games.

Alan Tucker's newest issue of Applied Combinatorics builds on the previous editions with more in depth analysis of computer systems in order to help... develop proficiency in basic discrete math problem solving. As one of the most widely used book in combinatorial problems, this edition explains how to reason and model combinatorically while stressing the systematic analysis of different possibilities, exploration of the logical structure of a problem, and ingenuity.

Now with solutions to selected problems, Applied Combinatorics, Second Edition presents the tools of combinatorics from an applied point of view. This... bestselling textbook offers numerous references to the literature of combinatorics and its applications that enable readers to delve more deeply into the topics. After introducing fundamental counting rules and the tools of graph theory and relations, the authors focus on three basic problems of combinatorics: counting, existence, and optimization problems. They discuss advanced tools for dealing with the counting problem, including generating functions, recurrences, inclusion/exclusion, and Pólya theory. The text then covers combinatorial design, coding theory, and special problems in graph theory. It also illustrates the basic ideas of combinatorial optimization through a study of graphs and networks.

This book covers laboratory and field experiments, surveys, content analysis, focus groups, and participant/non-participant observation. Information on... ethics and statistics is incorporated throughout the book, making it easier to understand how ethical considerations and statistical analysis relate to specific data collection techniques. To further enhance the usefulness and readability of the text, the authors provide review questions, key terms, and summaries of the main points at the end of each chapter.

This book presents a variety of computational methods used to solve dynamic problems in economics and finance. It emphasizes practical numerical methods... rather than mathematical proofs and focuses on techniques that apply directly to economic analyses. The examples are drawn from a wide range of subspecialties of economics and finance, with particular emphasis on problems in agricultural and resource economics, macroeconomics, and finance. The book also provides an extensive Web-site library of computer utilities and demonstration programs. The book is divided into two parts. The first part develops basic numerical methods, including linear and nonlinear equation methods, complementarity methods, finite-dimensional optimization, numerical integration and differentiation, and function approximation. The second part presents methods for solving dynamic stochastic models in economics and finance, including dynamic programming, rational expectations, and arbitrage pricing models in discrete and continuous time. The book uses MATLAB to illustrate the algorithms and includes a utilities toolbox to help readers develop their own computational economics applications.

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is concerned with the efficient numerical solution of the partial differential equations that describe fluid... dynamics. CFD techniques are commonly used in the many areas of engineering where fluid behavior is an important factor. Traditional fields of application include aerospace and automotive design, and more recently, bioengineering and consumer and medical electronics. With Applied Computational Fluid Dynamics Techniques, 2nd edition, Rainald Löhner introduces the reader to the techniques required to achieve efficient CFD solvers, forming a bridge between basic theoretical and algorithmic aspects of the finite element method and its use in an industrial context where methods have to be both as simple but also as robust as possible. This heavily revised second edition takes a practice-oriented approach with a strong emphasis on efficiency, and offers important new and updated material on;Overlapping and embedded grid methodsTreatment of free surfacesGrid generationOptimal use of supercomputing hardwareOptimal shape and process designApplied Computational Fluid Dynamics Techniques, 2nd edition is a vital resource for engineers, researchers and designers working on CFD, aero and hydrodynamics simulations and bioengineering. Its unique practical approach will also appeal to graduate students of fluid mechanics and aero and hydrodynamics as well as biofluidics.

Readable and usable in style and valuable in approach, this text provides the practical and succinct advice that students and practitioners need, rather... than a sole concentration on debate theory, assumptions, or models. Like no other text of its kind, the author applies corporate finance to real companies. The new Third Edition has four real-world core companies to study and follow. Perfected suited for MBA programs’ corporate finance and equity valuation courses, all business decisions are classified into three groups: the investment, financing, and dividend decisions.
