Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) championed the belief that people of conscience were at liberty to follow their own opinion. In these selections from... his writings, we see Thoreau the individualist and opponent of injustice. "Civil Disobedience" (1849), composed following Thoreau's imprisonment for refusing to pay his taxes in protest against slavery and the Mexican War, is an eloquent declaration of the principles that make revolution inevitable in times of political dishonour. "Solitude", from his masterpiece, "Walden" (1854), poetically describes Thoreau's oneness with nature and the companionship solitude offers to those who want to be rid of the travails of the world to discover themselves. "Life without Principle" (posthumously published 1863) decries the way in which excessive devotion to business and money coarsens the fabric of society: in merely making a living, the meaning of life gets lost.

This book deals with properties, applications and analysis of important materials of construction/civil engineering. It offers full coverage of how... materials are made or obtained, their physical properties, their mechanical properties, how they are used in construction, how they are tested in the lab, and their strength characteristics--information that is essential for material selection and elementary design. Contains illustrative examples and tables and figures from professional organizations. Considers all common materials of civil engineering/construction--and looks at each in depth: e.g., physical properties, mechanical properties, code provisions, methods of testing, quality control, construction procedures, and material selection. Discusses laboratory testing procedures for selected tests--provides step-by-step descriptions of laboratory test procedures to determine properties of materials. All test procedures are based on relevant ASTM specification. For Civil Engineers, Construction Engineers, Architects, and Agricultural Engineers.

The manner in which civil engineering is practiced must change. That change is necessitated by such forces as globalization, sustainability... requirements, emerging technology, and increased complexity with the corresponding need to identify, define, and solve problems at the boundaries of traditional disciplines. Beginning in 1998, ASCE s Board of Direction adopted, refined, and confirmed ASCE Policy Statement (PS) 465 Academic Prerequisites for Licensure and Professional Practice which ...supports the attainment of a body of knowledge (BOK) for entry into the practice of civil engineering at the professional level. PS 465 recognizes that the profession s principal means of changing the way civil engineering is practiced lies in reforming the manner in which tomorrow s civil engineers are prepared through education and early experience to enter professional practice. According to PS 465, the BOK will be fulfilled by means of formal education and experience that is, a bachelor s degree plus a master s degree, or approximately 30 semester credits, and experience. PS 465 and the foundational BOK will reform the education and prelicensure experience of tomorrow s civil engineers. Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge for the 21st Century: Preparing the Civil Engineer for the Future, Second Edition, focuses on outcomes to the proposed changes in the way civil engineering is taught and learned, including the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for entry into professional practice. The report also offers valuable guidance for faculty, students, engineer interns, and practitioners. The proposed changes to civil engineering education in Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge for the 21st Century: Preparing the Civil Engineer for the Future, Second Edition, will greatly improve the preparation of civil engineers for the profession.

A well-written, hands-on, single-source guide to the professional practice of civil engineeringThere is a growing understanding that to be competitive... at an international level, civil engineers not only must build on their traditional strengths in technology and science but also must acquire greater mastery of the business of civil engineering. Project management, teamwork, ethics, leadership, and communication have been defined as essential to the successful practice of civil engineering by the ASCE in the 2008 landmark publication, Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge for the 21st Century (BOK2). This single-source guide is the first to take the practical skills defined by the ASCE BOK2 and provide illuminating techniques, quotes, case examples, problems, and information to assist the reader in addressing the many challenges facing civil engineers in the real world. Civil Engineer's Handbook of Professional Practice:Focuses on the business and management aspects of a civil engineer's job, providing students and practitioners with sound business management principlesAddresses contemporary issues such as permitting, globalization, sustainability, and emerging technologiesOffers proven methods for balancing speed, quality, and price with contracting and legal issues in a client-oriented professionIncludes guidance on juggling career goals, life outside work, compensation, and growthFrom the challenge of sustainability to the rigors of problem recognition and solving, this book is an essential tool for those practicing civil engineering.

The end of the Cold War brought widespread optimism about the future of civil-military relations. But as Michael Desch argues in this thought-provoking... challenge to Harold Lasswell's famous "garrison state" thesis, the truth is that civilian authorities have not been able to exert greater control over military policies and decision making. In wartime, civil authorities cannot help but pay close attention to military matters. In times of peace, however, civilian leaders are less interested in military affairs—and therefore often surrender them to the military.Focusing on a wide range of times and places, Desch begins with a look at changes in U.S. civil-military relations since the end of the Cold War. He then turns to the former Soviet Union, explaining why it was easier for civilians to control the Soviet military than its present-day Russian successor. He examines the Hindenburg-Ludendorff dictatorship in World War I Germany, Japan during the interwar era, and France's role in the Algerian crisis. Finally, he explores the changing domestic security environment and civil-military relations in South America.
