Higher education has its own rules -- rules about who is heard, what counts as knowledge, what works as persuasion. They are conventions that must be... learned -- and taught. So it is no wonder that for new students, college can be a confusing place. Composing Knowledge asks students to examine their assumptions about learning. It provides them with a training ground for the sometimes disquieting experience of higher education, giving them the tools with which to understand their experience. For instructors, it offers provocative academic readings they themselves find engaging, allowing them to connect their scholarly interests to student experience. The readings explore the role of language in learning, the conventions of the classroom, the nature of persuasion, the importance of collaboration, the force of gender, the impact of technology, and the power of the image. When students contend with these issues, they see the ways that scholars view them, and enter the academic conversations that shape their college years -- and their future professional and civic lives.

“What any body is—and is able to do—cannot be disentangled from the media we use to consume and produce texts.” ---from the Introduction.Kristin... Arola and Anne Wysocki argue that composing in new media is composing the body—is embodiment. In Composing (Media) = Composing (Embodiment), they have brought together a powerful set of essays that agree on the need for compositionists—and their students—to engage with a wide range of new media texts. These chapters explore how texts of all varieties mediate and thereby contribute to the human experiences of communication, of self, the body, and composing. Sample assignments and activities exemplify how this exploration might proceed in the writing classroom.Contributors here articulate ways to understand how writing enables the experience of our bodies as selves, and at the same time to see the work of (our) writing in mediating selves to make them accessible to institutional perceptions and constraints. These writers argue that what a body does, and can do, cannot be disentangled from the media we use, nor from the times and cultures and technologies with which we engage. To the discipline of composition, this is an important discussion because it clarifies the impact/s of literacy on citizens, freedoms, and societies. To the classroom, it is important because it helps compositionists to support their students as they enact, learn, and reflect upon their own embodied and embodying writing.

There are poems and there are poems translated into another language. Composite Diplomacy presents us with a further possibility, presenting a poem, its... translation, as well as sentence diagrams, lexicons, and musical scores in one package. To read this poem is also to read the poem in the process of translation from a language built on tones to one without, from a language in one alphabet to one with another. The result is a forensic investigation not simply of this poem?s translation, but of the very notion of translation. Padcha Tuntha-obas offers her reader a "wakeful poetry" that inspires such marvelous poetic interventions. “Time that travels sings concurrently to the path of letters.“

The first textbook on the design of FRP for structural engineering applicationsComposites for Construction is a one-of-a-kind guide to understanding... fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) and designing and retrofitting structures with FRP. Written and organized like traditional textbooks on steel, concrete, and wood design, it demystifies FRP composites and demonstrates how both new and retrofit construction projects can especially benefit from these materials, such as offshore and waterfront structures, bridges, parking garages, cooling towers, and industrial buildings. The code-based design guidelines featured in this book allow for demonstrated applications to immediately be implemented in the real world. Covered codes and design guidelines include ACI 440, ASCE Structural Plastics Design Manual, EUROCOMP Design Code, AASHTO Specifications, and manufacturer-published design guides. Procedures are provided to the structural designer on how to use this combination of code-like documents to design with FRP profiles. In four convenient sections, Composites for Construction covers:* An introduction to FRP applications, products and properties, and to the methods of obtaining the characteristic properties of FRP materials for use in structural design* The design of concrete structural members reinforced with FRP reinforcing bars* Design of FRP strengthening systems such as strips, sheets, and fabrics for upgrading the strength and ductility of reinforced concrete structural members* The design of trusses and frames made entirely of FRP structural profiles produced by the pultrusion process
