In math, like any subject, real learning takes place when students can connect what they already know to new ideas. In Connecting Mathematical Ideas, Jo... Boaler and Cathy Humphreys offer a comprehensive way to improve your ability to help adolescents build connections between different mathematical ideas and representations and between domains like algebra and geometry. Connecting Mathematical Ideas contains two-CDs worth of video case studies from Humphreys' own middle-school classroom that show her encouraging students to bridge complex mathematical concepts with their prior knowledge. Replete with math talk and coverage of topics like representation, reasonableness, and proof, the CDs also include complete transcripts and study questions that stimulate professional learning. Meanwhile, the accompanying book guides you through the CDs with in-depth commentary from Boaler and Humphreys that breaks down and analyzes the lesson footage from both a theoretical and a practical standpoint. In addition to addressing the key content areas of middle school mathematics, Boaler and Humphreys pose and help you address a broad range of frequently asked pedagogical questions, such as: How can I organize productive class discussions? How do I ask questions that stimulate discussion and thought among my students? What's the most effective way to encourage reticent class members to speak up? What role should student errors play in my teaching? Go inside real classrooms to solve your toughest teaching questions. Use the case studies and the wealth of professional support within Connecting Mathematical Ideas and find new ways to help your students connect with math.

This book provides general descriptions of children’s learning and is intended to help show how children approach mathematics differently than adults.... By connecting children’s thinking to your own learning, we hope that this book will improve your understanding of both mathematics and children’s thinking, thereby enhancing your teaching of mathematics to children. The more you understand mathematics and how children think about mathematics, the better teacher you will be! Each chapter section contains insights and examples of how children come to understand mathematics. Many of the descriptions of how children learn are based on research, but some are based on the authors’ personal experiences with helping children learn mathematics. As appropriate, the authors also include information on the “why” behind certain mathematical topics, how to incorporate manipulatives into the classroom, and some activities to try. Each section also has “Questions for Discussion” to encourage reflection while learning. At the end of each section are “Problems and Exercises” that are specifically designed to help show how children learn mathematics. The material is presented by topic, following the standard topics covered in a traditional mathematics for future elementary or middle school teacher’s course.

This book explores five important areas where technology affects society, and suggests ways in which human communication can facilitate the use of that... technology. Usability has become a foundational discipline in technical and professional communication that grows out of our rhetorical roots, which emphasize purpose and audience. As our appreciation of audience has grown beyond engineers and scientists to lay users of technology, our appreciation of the diversity of those audiences in terms of age, geography, and other factors has similarly expanded. We are also coming to grips with what Thomas Friedman calls the 'flat world,' a paradigm that influences how we communicate with members of other cultures and speakers of other languages. And because most of the flatteners are either technologies themselves or technology-driven, technical and professional communicators need to leverage these technologies to serve global audiences. Similarly, we are inundated with information about world crises involving health and safety issues. These crises are driven by the effects of terrorism, the aging population, HIV/AIDS, and both human-made and natural disasters. These issues are becoming more visible because they are literally matters of life and death. Furthermore, they are of special concern to audiences that technical and professional communicators have little experience targeting - the shapers of public policy, seniors, adolescents, and those affected by disaster. Biotechnology is another area that has provided new roles for technical and professional communicators. We are only beginning to understand how to communicate the science accurately without either deceiving or panicking our audience. We need to develop a more sophisticated understanding of how communication can shape reactions to biotechnology developments. Confronting this complex network of issues, we're challenged to fashion both our message and the audience's perceptions ethically. Finally, today's corporate environment is being shaped by technology and the global nature of business. Technical and professional communicators can play a role in capturing and managing knowledge, in using technology effectively in the virtual workplace, and in understanding how language shapes organizational culture. Intended Audience: This book will be of interest to practitioners in technical and professional communication and to students and academics seeking up-to-date information on current industry practices in technical communication. Colleges and universities that offer bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs in technical communication will find this a useful addition to their libraries. The book is also suitable as a text for undergraduate seminars and some courses at the master's level.

Traditionally, human services policy has been made by people whose own lives are unaffected by their decisions. As a consequence, that policy often... fails to meet the needs of service users. In this third edition of Connecting Policy to Practice in the Human Services, Brad McKenzie and Brian Wharf suggest that a more inclusive process will produce better results. Following a careful examination of current practices, they look at a number of alternative strategies, including shared decision-making, policy communities, and community governance. This edition has been updated throughout and features a new chapter presenting a case study analysis of policy resistance, new chapter summaries, end-of-chapter critical thinking questions, and an online glossary, making it the most current and engaging text available. Linking Canadian social welfare policy with social welfare practice, this indispensable resource encourages and facilitates participation in a process that has significant consequences for many lives.

Academic writing often requires students to incorporate material from outside sources (like statistics, ideas, quotations, paraphrases) into their own... written texts-a particular obstacle for students who lack strong reading skills. In Connecting Reading and Writing in Second Language Instruction, Alan Hirvela contends that second language writing students should be considered as readers first and advocates the integration of reading and writing instruction with a survey of theory, research, and pedagogy in the subject area.Although the integrated reading-writing model has gained popularity in recent years, many teachers have little more than an intuitive sense of the connections between these skills. As part of the popular Michigan Series on Teaching Multilingual Writers, Connecting Reading and Writing in Second Language Instruction will provide invaluable background knowledge on this issue to ESL teachers in training, as well as teachers who are already practicing.

Is violence on the streets caused by violence in video games? Do hip-hop lyrics increase misogynistic and homophobic behavior? Are teens promiscuous... because of what they see in movies? Popular culture is an easy answer for many of society’s problems, but it is almost always the wrong answer. This innovative book goes beyond the news-grabbing headlines claiming that popular culture is public enemy number one to consider what really causes the social problems we are most concerned about. The sobering fact is that the roots of poverty, child abuse, and unequal public education are much more complicated than the media-made-them-do-it explanations. Karen Sternheimer deftly illustrates how welfare “reform,” a two-tiered health care system, and other difficult systemic issues have far more to do with our contemporary social problems than Grand Theft Auto or 50 Cent.

In Connecting Spheres, Boxer and Quataert, along with an array of eminent contributors, examine the social history of women within western civilization... over the past 500 years. Expanded and updated, this new edition addresses both long-standing and more recent issues which have affected women's lives in modern Europe. These topics include the role of women in public versus private spheres; changes in family life in post-communist Eastern Europe; the impact of religion on the lives of women; the growth of the prostitution sector; the rise of feminism and anti-feminism; and the part female sexuality has played impacting women's roles in social and political life. New essays and new, broader general and section introduction by the authors make this text as appropriate and applicable to general survey studies of modern European history as it is for women's history courses.
