This volume provides edited selections, together with an introduction, notes, and glossary, from the lengthy and entertaining thirteenth-century Welsh... epic, Ystorya Bown o Hamtwn. A hugely popular tale, Ystorya Bown is drawn from the Anglo-Norman epic Geste de Boeve de Haumtone (which was itself translated not only into Welsh, but also Middle English, Old Norse, and Early Modern Irish), and it relays a story of heroic Christian fortitude that offers contemporary readers fascinating insights into its cultural transmission and the worldview of its audiences.

Culinary Art and Anthropology is an anthropological study of food. It focuses on taste and flavor using an original interpretation of Alfred Gell's... theory of the "art nexus." Grounded in ethnography, it explores the notion of cooking as an embodied skill and artistic practice. The integral role and concept of "flavor" in everyday life is examined among cottage industry barbacoa makers in Milpa Alta, an outer district of Mexico City. Women's work and local festive occasions are examined against a background of material on professional chefs who reproduce "traditional" Mexican cooking in restaurant settings. Including recipes to allow readers to practice the art of Mexican cooking, Culinary Art and Anthropology offers a sensual, theoretically sophisticated model for understanding food anthropologically. It will appeal to social scientists, food lovers, and those interested in the growing fields of food studies and the anthropology of the senses.

This workbook/website combination allows students to analyze and manipulate huge data sets drawn from 1950 through present day, with data from U.S.... decennial censuses and the American Community Survey. Each chapter consists of exercises specifically tailored to data sets drawn from this current data. Students gain access to the software and data sets by using passcodes provided with each copy of the text. An important feature new with this edition of the book allows students to conduct their analysis directly on the Web. The Internet-based WebCHIP version of the traditional StudentCHIP software permits students to access datasets and create tables on any computer that has an Internet connection. Moreover, the textbook homepage at http://www.cengage.com/sociology/frey lets the student access all of the data simply and directly. In addition, this site also offers a number of tutorials, references, aids, and analysis tools that will come in handy for you and your students. The new edition will take advantage of the fact that the Census Bureau is now releasing annual data that was previously only available every ten years, based on the American Community Survey (ACS). Exercises and their instructions are updated to reflect the availability of new data and data set labels.

For South Asians, food regularly plays a role in how issues of race, class, gender, ethnicity, and national identity are imagined as well as how notions... of belonging are affirmed or resisted. "Culinary Fictions" provides food for thought as it considers the metaphors literature, film, and TV shows use to describe Indians abroad. When an immigrant mother in Jhumpa Lahiri's "The Namesake", combines Rice Krispies, Planters peanuts, onions, salt, lemon juice, and green chili peppers to create a dish similar to one found on Calcutta sidewalks, it not only evokes the character's Americanization, but also her nostalgia for India. Food, Anita Mannur writes, is a central part of the cultural imagination of diasporic populations, and "Culinary Fictions" maps how it figures in various expressive forms. Mannur examines the cultural production from the Anglo-American reaches of the South Asian diaspora. Using texts from novels - Chitra Divakaruni's "Mistress of Spices", and Shani Mootoo's "Cereus Blooms at Night" - to cookbooks such as Madhur Jaffrey's "Invitation to Indian Cooking" and Padma Lakshmi's "Easy Exotic", she illustrates how national identities are consolidated in culinary terms.
