Designing Solutions for Your Business Problems is an essential resource for managers and consultants who help organizations resolve ambiguous problems... and develop new opportunities. Taking a hands-on, practical approach, Betty Vandenbosch—a leading management consultant and educator—outlines the details on how to conduct a proven process for designing solutions.Designing Solutions for Your Business Problems will teach you how to curtail investigation and generate and justify ideas without sacrificing thoroughness, creativity, persuasiveness, and fit. You will be able to capitalize on more opportunities, and your problem-solving skills will become more efficient and your solutions more compelling. This book will help you design better solutions and design them faster.Betty Vandenbosch offers a variety of useful techniques such as the "scooping diagram," which provides a framework for action, and the "logic diagram," which tests the validity of a potential solution. In addition, the book contains illustrative real-life examples of the Designing Solutions approach from a variety of organizations.

Designing Sound teaches students and professional sound designers to understand and create sound effects starting from nothing. Its thesis is that any... sound can be generated from first principles, guided by analysis and synthesis. The text takes a practitioner's perspective, exploring the basic principles of making ordinary, everyday sounds using an easily accessed free software. Readers use the Pure Data (Pd) language to construct sound objects, which are more flexible and useful than recordings. Sound is considered as a process, rather than as data--an approach sometimes known as "procedural audio." Procedural sound is a living sound effect that can run as computer code and be changed in real time according to unpredictable events. Applications include video games, film, animation, and media in which sound is part of an interactive process. The book takes a practical, systematic approach to the subject, teaching by example and providing background information that offers a firm theoretical context for its pragmatic stance. [Many of the examples follow a pattern, beginning with a discussion of the nature and physics of a sound, proceeding through the development of models and the implementation of examples, to the final step of producing a Pure Data program for the desired sound. Different synthesis methods are discussed, analyzed, and refined throughout.] After mastering the techniques presented in Designing Sound, students will be able to build their own sound objects for use in interactive applications and other projects

This nuts-and-bolts guide to sound design for animated films explains audio software, free downloads, how sound works, the power of sound when wielded... by an animation filmmaker, and provides varieties of examples for how to use sound to enliven your films with professional sound.Sound-savvy animators save precious resources (time and money) by using sound for effects they don't necessarily have time to create. For example, the sound of a crow flying gives viewers a sense of the crow without the crow. Where there's a macabre element or scene in an animated film, this book explains why you should choose a low frequency sound for it-low frequencies are scary, because the ear can't decipher their origin or direction! On the DVD: three 5-minute animations; sample sound clips, jump cuts and video streams; plus motion graphics with which to practice sound-applications explained in this book.

The Second Edition of Designing Surveys: A Guide to Decisions and Procedures accounts for changes in telephone, Internet, and email surveying and... provides a more comprehensive treatment on questionnaire testing. Despite changing technologies, however, the principles of scientific survey design remain unchanged, including the selection of the sample, the writing of questions to solicit an unbiased response, and the ethical treatment of human subjects. This new edition addresses these issues in the context of new and emerging technologies and their relationship to survey design and the social sciences. Designing Surveys provides an accurate account of how modern survey research is actually conducted, but with the needs and goals of a novice researcher in mind.

This is a practical book on creating packaging prototypes that reflect sustainable and ecologically sound principles. It challenges the next generation... of graphic designers to re-envision packaging design as a less environmentally destructive practice than it presently is, and examines an array of techniques and methodologies for creating innovative and sustainable packaging designs, from first concept to final production. The book is organized into two distinct sections embracing first the theory, including many case studies, and then the practice of eco-friendly packaging design. In the first part of the book, after introducing the student to the background of packaging design and its purpose, the author focuses on issues of sustainability. Through a series of case studies and interviews he looks at some of the companies that are leading the way in sustainable packaging. The second part of the book provides practical information on creating eco-friendly packaging and follows various projects through, step by step.

The first of its kind, Designing Tall Buildings is an accessible reference that guides you through the fundamental principles of designing high-rises.... Each chapter focuses on one theme central to tall-building design, giving you a comprehensive overview of the related architecture and structural engineering concepts. Mark P. Sarkisian provides clear definitions of technical terms and introduces important equations, to help you gradually develop your knowledge. Later chapters allow you to explore more complex applications, such as biomimicry. Projects drawn from Skidmore, Owings and Merrill’s vast catalog of built high-rises, many of which Sarkisian designed, demonstrate these concepts. This book advises you to consider the influence of a particular site’s geology, wind conditions, and seismicity. Using this contextual knowledge and analysis, you can determine what types of structural solutions are best suited for a tower on that site. You can then conceptualize and devise efficient structural systems that are not only safe, but also constructible and economical. Sarkisian also addresses the influence of nature in design, urging you to integrate structure and architecture for buildings of superior performance, sustainability, and aesthetic excellence.

The US Dept. of Education, in conjunction with the US Dept. of Health and Human Services, recently unveiled a $50 million effort to expand research on... early childhood cognitive development. A key issue identified requiring more information and research was the education and professional development of educators. Along these lines, Doug Greer has prepared a book discussing how best to teach, how to design functional curricula, and how to support teachers in using state-of-the-art science instruction materials. The book provides important information both to trainers of future teachers, current teachers, and to supervisors and policy makers in education. To trainers there is information on how to motivate, mentor, and instruct in-service teachers to use the best scientifically based teaching strategies and tactics. To in-service teachers, there is information on how to provide individualized instruction in classrooms with multiple learning and behavior problems, school interventions to help prevent vandalism and truancy, and how curricula and instruction can be designed to teach functional repetoirs rather than inert ideas. To policy makers and supervisors, the book discusses how to determine the effectiveness of curricular innitiatives toward meeting mandated standards in national assessments.Doug Greer was recently awarded the Fred S. Keller Award for Distinguished Contributions to Education by APA for the research and application of the material covered in this book. School programs incorporating the material used in this book have produced 4-7 times more learning outcomes for students than control and baseline educational programs (see www.cabas.com)The book provides research-based and field-tested procedures for:* Teaching students of all ability levels ranging from preschool to secondary school* How to teach special education students in the context of a regular classroom* Best practices for all teachers to teach more effectively* Means of monitoring and motivating teachers' practices * A comprehensive and system-wide science of teaching-post modern-postmodern!* Tested procedures that result in four to seven times more learning for allstudents* Tested procedures for supervisors to use with teachers that result insignificant student learning* Tested procedures for providing the highest accountability* A systems approach for schooling problems that provide solutions ratherthan blame* Parent approved and parent requested educational practices* Means for psychologists to work with teachers and students to solvebehavior and learning problems* A comprehensive systems science of schooling* An advanced and sophisticated science of pedagogy and curriculum design* Students who are not being served with traditional education can meet orexceed the performance of their more fortunate peers,* Supervisors can mentor teachers and therapists to provide state of thescience instruction* Parent education can create a professional setting for parents, educators, and therapists to work together in the best interests of the student,* Teachers and supervisors who measure as they teach produce significantlybetter outcomes for students,* Systemic solutions to instructional and behavioral problems involvingteachers, parents, supervisors provide means to pursue problems to theirsolution,* A science of teaching, as opposed to an art of teaching, can provide aneducational system that treats the students and the parents as the clients.
