Unlike other books in the market, this second edition presents differential equations consistent with the way scientists and engineers use modern... methods in their work. Technology is used freely, with more emphasis on modeling, graphical representation, qualitative concepts, and geometric intuition than on theoretical issues. It also refers to larger-scale computations that computer algebra systems and DE solvers make possible. And more exercises and examples involving working with data and devising the model provide scientists and engineers with the tools needed to model complex real-world situations.

Incorporating a modeling approach throughout, this exciting text emphasizes concepts and shows that the study of differential equations is a beautiful... application of the ideas and techniques of calculus to everyday life. By taking advantage of readily available technology, the authors eliminate most of the specialized techniques for deriving formulas for solutions found in traditional texts and replace them with topics that focus on the formulation of differential equations and the interpretations of their solutions. Students will generally attack a given equation from three different points of view to obtain an understanding of the solutions: qualitative, numeric, and analytic. Since many of the most important differential equations are nonlinear, students learn that numerical and qualitative techniques are more effective than analytic techniques in this setting. Overall, students discover how to identify and work effectively with the mathematics in everyday life, and they learn how to express the fundamental principles that govern many phenomena in the language of differential equations.

This text by best-selling author Dennis G. Zill provides an alternative to more traditional differential equations texts by addressing the growing... influence of technology in teaching differential equations. This book will appeal to instructors who wish to integrate the computer into teaching theory and applications of differential equations. Qualitative and numerical aspects of differential equations are introduced early in the text. In this edition, computer lab experiments, projects, and writing assignments now appear in a section at the end of each chapter.

Incorporating an innovative modeling approach, this book for a one-semester differential equations course emphasizes conceptual understanding to help... users relate information taught in the classroom to real-world experiences. Certain models reappear throughout the book as running themes to synthesize different concepts from multiple angles, and a dynamical systems focus emphasizes predicting the long-term behavior of these recurring models. Users will discover how to identify and harness the mathematics they will use in their careers, and apply it effectively outside the classroom.

Linearity plays a critical role in the study of elementary differential equations; linear differential equations, especially systems thereof,... demonstrate a fundamental application of linear algebra. In Differential Equations with Linear Algebra, we explore this interplay between linear algebra and differential equations and examine introductory and important ideas in each, usually through the lens of important problems that involve differential equations. Written at a sophomore level, the text is accessible to students who have completed multivariable calculus. With a systems-first approach, the book is appropriate for courses for majors in mathematics, science, and engineering that study systems of differential equations. Because of its emphasis on linearity, the text opens with a full chapter devoted to essential ideas in linear algebra. Motivated by future problems in systems of differential equations, the chapter on linear algebra introduces such key ideas as systems of algebraic equations, linear combinations, the eigenvalue problem, and bases and dimension of vector spaces. This chapter enables students to quickly learn enough linear algebra to appreciate the structure of solutions to linear differential equations and systems thereof in subsequent study and to apply these ideas regularly. The book offers an example-driven approach, beginning each chapter with one or two motivating problems that are applied in nature. The following chapter develops the mathematics necessary to solve these problems and explores related topics further. Even in more theoretical developments, we use an example-first style to build intuition and understanding before stating or proving general results. Over 100 figures provide visual demonstration of key ideas; the use of the computer algebra system Maple and Microsoft Excel are presented in detail throughout to provide further perspective and support students' use of technology in solving problems. Each chapter closes with several substantial projects for further study, many of which are based in applications.

"Differential Equations with MATLAB" (2nd ed.) by B. Hunt, R. Lipsman, J.Osborn and J.Rosenberg is a supplemental text that can enrich and enhance any... first course in ordinary differential equations. Designed to accompany Wiley's ODE texts written by Boyce/DiPrima, Borrelli/Coleman and Lomen/Lovelock, this supplement helps instructors move towards an earlier use of numerical and geometric methods, place a greater emphasis on systems (including nonlinear ones), and increase discussions of both the benefits and possible pitfalls in numerical solution of ODEs. By providing an introduction to the software that is integrated with the relevant mathematics, "Differential Equations with MATLAB" can perfectly complement and enhance these texts.

Developed from a first-year graduate course in algebraic topology, this text is an informal introduction to some of the main ideas of contemporary... homotopy and cohomology theory. The materials are structured around four core areas: de Rham theory, the Cech-de Rham complex, spectral sequences, and characteristic classes. By using the de Rham theory of differential forms as a prototype of cohomology, the machineries of algebraic topology are made easier to assimilate. With its stress on concreteness, motivation, and readability, this book is equally suitable for self-study and as a one-semester course in topology.
