This vivid autobiography by one of the leaders in the fight for woman suffrage is a stirring depiction of the early struggles of American women toward... equality. The new introduction and afterword written for the revised edition interpret Elizabeth Cady Stanton's positions and strategies for today's readers, detail the significance of the autobiography and situate it within the body of Stanton's writings and activities, bring current scholarship to the appraisal of her importance, and reflect on the last part of her life.Elizabeth Cady Stanton writes about her life from childhood into her eighties. She recalls the discontent that led her to launch the woman suffrage movement at Seneca Falls in 1848 and the frustration of still having no voice in her own government after a half century of hard work.In lively and opinionated prose, Stanton conveys all the passion that made her a guiding force in the women's movement. She provides an affectionate picture of her friend and political partner, Susan B. Anthony, and other leaders in the abolitionist and woman suffrage movements. She describes the immeasurable pleasure of winning converts to her cause and the satisfaction of silencing opponents through the force of her argument.Sometimes humorous, sometimes touching, filled with resolve throughout, Eighty Years and More is a compelling portrait of this remarkable leader.

Published just after the execution of King Charles I in 1649, Eikon Basilike is a defence of the king's motivations and actions prior to and during the... British civil wars. Nine chapters of Eikonoklastes, John Milton s response to Eikon Basilike, are also included in this edition. Here Milton, writing from a republican perspective, attacks the substance and style of the King's Book. These fascinating texts are now available in an edition that also includes a rich selection of historical documents. This Broadview edition's critical introduction discusses the publication history and both seventeenth-century and current debates regarding the work and its authorship, while the appendices provide a generous selection of contemporary responses to Eikon Basilike and accounts of the king's trial and scaffold speech.

Barbara Honigmann’s Eine Liebe aus nichts tells the story of a young expatriate’s journey back to Weimar to attend her father’s funeral. As the... narrator remembers her father’s life, she explores her own past and relates her struggle to establish new roots following her emigration from Berlin to Paris. In its portrayal of a young woman’s complex relationship with her father, the novella offers a rich account of German-Jewish history and of the search for identity in the shadow of World War II. This reader is designed for intermediate and advanced German classes. In addition to English glosses of challenging words, annotations are presented alongside the original German text and provide information about cultural and literary contexts. This edition also offers study lists for active vocabulary; language in context” exercises; activities for close reading, creative writing, and literary analysis; discussion questions and suggestions for dialogues. A final section with secondary texts related to the novel and a brief biography of the author give students additional tools to engage with Eine Liebe aus nichts and to explore its deeper meaning.

Over the course of nearly thirty years, the environmental justice movement has changed the politics of environmental activism and influenced... environmental policy. In the process, it has turned the attention of environmental activists and regulatory agencies to issues of pollution, toxics, and human health as they affect ordinary people, especially people of color. This book argues that the environmental justice movement has also begun to transform science and engineering. The chapters present case studies of technical experts' encounters with environmental justice activists and issues, exploring the transformative potential of these interactions. Technoscience and Environmental Justice first examines the scientific practices and identities of technical experts who work with environmental justice organizations, whether by becoming activists themselves or by sharing scientific information with communities. It then explore scientists' and engineers' activities in such mainstream scientific institutions as regulatory agencies and universities, where environmental justice concerns have been (partially) institutionalized as a response to environmental justice activism. All of the chapters grapple with the difficulty of transformation that experts face, but the studies also show how environmental justice activism has created opportunities for changing technical practices and, in a few cases, has even accomplished significant transformations.
