To pass the time on a long train ride from London to Cromwell, playwright Harold Pinter and his two companions, Geoffrey Godbert and Anthony Astbury,... set up a challenge: Choose 100 poems by 100 poets — living poets excluded — to represent the finest poetry ever written in English. The three agreed to organize this collection unconventionally, alphabetically by author rather than chronologically. The resulting anthology is challenging, eclectic, very personal, and great fun. With its surprising juxtapositions and gargantuan range of voice and style, 100 Poems by 100 Poets brings old favorites into a new light and less well-known poems out of the shadows.

It is remarkable that any Westerner—even so fine a poet as Kenneth Rexroth—could have captured in translation so much of the subtle essence of... classic Japanese poetry: the depth of controlled passion, the austere elegance of style, the compressed richness of imagery. The poems are drawn chiefly from the traditional Manyoshu, Kokinshu and Hyakunin Isshu collections, but there are also examplaes of haiku and other later forms. The sound of the Japanese texts i reproduced in Romaji script and the names of the poets in the calligraphy of Ukai Uchiyama. The translator's introduction gives us basic background on the history and nature of Japanese poetry, which is supplemented by notes on the individual poets and an extensive bibliography.

When teaching foreigners Chinese, teachers often meet many questions about Chinese culture put forward by their students. This indicates that foreigners... are becoming more and more interested in the glorious Chinese culture; and on the other hand, it also indicates that cultural introduction in teaching Chinese as a foreign language is a part that can not be ignored. The compilation of this book is to supply some useful materials for Chinese teaching with a view to spread Chinese culture. Since Chinese culture is so rich and colorful, it is surely impossible to give an overall introduction in such a small book. In this book, we will give very brief explanations to those questions frequently popping up in our teaching. To make it easier for foreigners to read, we also provide English translations. However, we should specify that not every article in this book has been translated word by word. Hereby we would like to acknowledge Mr. Cheng Yuzhen for his revising the Chinese part of the articles in the book, and Professor Wang Yuju for his proof-reading a number of our English translations. Special thanks go to Messes. Gao Fusheng, Chen Kunru and Cheng Shaofu, who share the work of examining the English version and making a great deal of valuable comments. We would also like to express our thanks to Ms. Wang Suyun from Beijing Language and Culture University Press, whose conscientious and detailed editorial work is a big contribution to the final publication of this book. We would also like to acknowledge many authors because we have taken their works as reference in compiling our book. Their names will not be listed here because of a big number of them.

A Farcical Comedy for All GroupsCharacters: 9 male, 6 female. Three interior scenesNew York Idea is a sparkling American classic. Baker's is pleased to... offer this polished comedy about New York society at the turn of the century and its heads or tails attitude towards divorce. The action takes place on the eve of Cynthia Karslake's wedding and on the day itself. Gathered for the occasion are all the intended, rejected and contemplated, along with the usual relatives and servants (used to great effect as ploys for various schemes). Throw into the mix Sir Wilfrid Cates-Darby, a visting Englishman who looks upon the New York marriage mores with delighted and ripe mischief, and you have all the ingredients for uproarious farce. In the end, the intended aren't, the rejected are, and it's all a merry scene of deception and self-deception."The New York Idea (is) a notable work of the early 20th century Broadway stage." - Variety

E.E. Cummings is without question one of the major poets of this century, and this volume, first published in 1959, is indispensable for every lover of... modern lyrical verse. It contains one hundred of Cummings’s wittiest and most profound poems, harvested from thirty-five of the most radically creative years in contemporary American poetry. These poems exhibit all the extraordinary lyricism, playfulness, technical ingenuity, and compassion for which Cummings is famous. They demonstrate beautifully his extrapolations from traditional poetic structures and his departures from them, as well as the unique synthesis of lavish imagery and acute artistic precision that has won him the adulation and respect of critics and poetry lovers everywhere.
